PREVIEW: St. John Bosco @ Mater Dei: The Super Bowl of High School Football

by Ethan Piechota

The undefeated and top-ranked St. John Bosco Braves will take on their storied rival, the Mater Dei Monarchs today in the high school football game of the year at the Santa Ana Bowl.

If there was ever a time for the Bosco community to be more connected and unified together with one goal and one purpose, it’s now.

How much more could you want? The top two teams in the nation go at it tonight, on live TV, with every scout in the country watching and a host of top players and recruits on display.

DJ Uiagalelei. Bryce Young. Two pairs of five-star quarterbacks that can pretty much go anywhere in America for their college career.

Chris Steele. Bru McCoy. Arguably the best cornerback and best wide receiver in California going at it all night.

The Tribe. The… does their student section even have a name?

The color red should be illegal in all forms on Bosco’s campus today. This game is pretty clearly one of the biggest games in Bosco’s long history, just based off the circumstances and both teams’ success up to this point in the season.

The Braves will need to start fast on offense again, which they’ll done well all year. Uiagalelei and his receivers have had great chemistry all year, and being able to find guys like Kris Hutson, Jude Wolfe, Colby Bowman, and Jake Bailey will be key early in the game.

Braves running back George Holani has been playing at an insane level in recent weeks, recently committing to Boise State on a full-ride scholarship in the process. Holani has rushed for 9.8 yards per carry this season and a whopping eleven touchdowns already, showcasing his ability as a true workhorse halfback.

Uiagalelei has also been unstoppable this season as a passer, completing 102/137 (!!!) of his passes this year for 1535 yards and 23 touchdowns. Not to mention, Uiagalelei has only thrown one interception this season as well.

It’s time for Brave Nation to stand up. The top defense in the nation of the Braves and the high-powered offense that has consistently shown up every week needs to now show up on the biggest stage tonight. Go Braves.

Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov: The Fight of the Millineum

by Nikolas Molina

With Khabib Nurmagomedov being a dominant top position grappler and Conor McGregor being an insane kick boxer, this match was destined to be one for the books.

It took roughly less than 30 seconds for Nurmagomedov to set up an attack for the first time, a single leg that was awkward. McGregor defended it well and did nothing for a while. Once Nurmagomedov was on top, he started to work towards his favorite leg triangle, and McGregor tried to counter by wall-walking.

When on top, Nurmagomedov was conservative. Working inches at a time, McGregor tried to work and advance into better position. McGregor was able to delay for quite a long time, but Nurmagomedov worked his way into a strong half guard and finished the round with some decent shots.

Nurmagomedov opened the second round with a massive overhand that planted McGregor on the floor. He was a bit frantic in trying to achieve the knockout, but Nurmagomedov settled down and landed a takedown along the fence. This time, Nurmagomedov settled into guard and went to work. McGregor mostly just held on his back.

Nurmagomedov picked openings and landed huge blows. Quickly, Nurmagomedov was standing above McGregor and dropping hard shots, which was some real damage. McGregor took the shots and kept going, he even stood up in the final seconds of the round.

McGregor opened the third round by targeting the body with crosses and kicks. He finally denied the takedown for the first time, but Nurmagomedov backed him up with some hard shots and drove him into the fence. After denying another takedown, they went back to trading shots on the feet. Nurmagomedov finished the closest round yet by driving McGregor into the fence, only scoring a takedown.

McGregor opened the fourth round with some kicks to the abdomen, making sure to keep his distance. However, Nurmagomedov was able to drive McGregor into the fence and shoot in, securing another takedown along the fence. Nurmagomedov immediately transitioned into his leg triangle, forcing McGregor to turn his back and give up the mount.

McGregor worked to recover guard, but Nurmagomedov put him back into mount. McGregor made an attempt to escape, which allowed Nurmagomedov to advance into back mount. There would be escape for McGregor as Nurmagomedov latched onto his jaw and cranked his way to a submission.

Nurmagomedov won the fight through submission in the fourth round of the lightweight title fight. But the victory seemed overlooked by the post-fight brawl which ended up in three arrests.

After McGregor tapped out, Khabib immediately and pointed at somebody and started talking towards McGregor’s corner. He hopped over the cage and attacked McGregor’s training partner, Bellator welterweight Dillon Danis.

Meanwhile this is going on McGregor is being attacked by two of Nurmagomedov entourage. Zubaira Tukhugov a flyweight fighter was one of two part of the entourage, he struck McGregor on the back of the head then was dragged away.

Dana White, UFC President, confirmed later, that three members of Nurmagomedov’s entourage have been arrested. McGregor decided to not press charges against them. White stated that the UFC fighters involved in the attack are never going to fight for the UFC ever again.

“I’ve been doing this for 18 years and I couldn’t be more disappointed,” White stated in the post-fight conference. “It was a very good week for everybody. It just sucks to end it like this, instead of celebrating we’re saying ‘that was pretty s***’.”

It took minutes for security and police officers to bring the situation under control. Dana White and Nurmagomedov then got into a argument when White would not present him the belt inside the octagon.  McGregor did not attend the post-fight conference, Nurmagomedov apologized at the conference but blamed McGregor for the post-fight brawl. Khabib extended his professional record to 27-0 with the win.

“First of all, I want to say sorry to the Nevada Athletic Commission and second to Vegas. I know this is not my best side. I’m a human being. But I don’t understand how people can talk about how I jump on the cage. He talked about my religion, he talked about my country, he talked about my father. He came to Brooklyn and he broke a bus, he almost killed a couple of people. What about this s***? Why do people talk about me jumping over the cage? I don’t understand. This is a respectful sport, not a trash-talking sport. I want to change the game, you cannot talk about religion, about nationality,” said Nurmagomedov in his post-fight interview.

White stated that he would not take Khabib’s title away, but there will be fines, penalties, and suspensions handed out.

“There’s going to be fines, there’s going to be God knows what. Can these guys get visas and get back in the country? We’ll see how this thing plays out. The Nevada State Athletic Commission is going to go after him pretty hard, I’m sure. He doesn’t have to worry about me right now; he has to worry about Nevada. The governor was here tonight, and he went running out of the building. That’s not good. He’s in trouble,” said White.

Khabib has not yet been paid for the fight and the entire situation is still under close investigation.

Sports: NFL Quarterly Review

by Lucas Garrison

So far, the 2018 NFL season has been a rollercoaster ride, as teams that very few people thought would be contenders are proving everyone wrong.

NFL: Kansas City Chiefs at Denver Broncos

The Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals have all proved that they are contenders in the league this year. On the flip side, your typical top contenders such as the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles have all had shaky starts and are struggling.

Below are bold predictions for the rest of the season and some thoughts on what the NFL might look like by February.

Is the Patriots Dynasty Over?

Bill Belichick, Tom Brady

Overreaction:

  • After last season’s Super Bowl loss, the offseason was a bizarre one for the Patriots. It was leaked that the big three (Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft) were not getting along and Belichick was being cast out and seen as the bad guy. When it came to the NFL Draft, Belichick and the front office seemed to be leaking who they were looking at potentially drafting. Rob Gronkowski trade rumors surfaced, and the team seemed to be in a bad spot.

Reality:

  • In the month of September, the Patriots have always been shaky. Plus, they just added wide receiver Josh Gordon and now have veteran receiver Julian Edelman back from suspension. Expect the Patriots to be in easy playoff contention and run through the weak AFC East.

Final Verdict:

Everyone needs to calm down. It’s the New England Patriots.

Will the Buccaneers Make the Playoffs?ryan-fitzpatrick.jpg

Overreaction:

  • The Bucs are now 2-2 after starting 2-0 behind an unreal start from journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has since been relieved of his starting job by Jameis Winston.

Reality:

  • The Bucs are now giving up on “Fitz-Magic” after one bad outing. Jameis Winston aka “The Disaster” came in and on his first drive of the season, threw an interception. They will no longer be looking the way they did through the first quarter of the season with Winston at the helm and finish in contention for a top ten pick.

Final Verdict:

  • As long is Jameis is the quarterback, the Bucs won’t be a contender for anything except last place.

Will the Steelers Make the Playoffs?usatsi-10441209-antonio-brown-steelers-td

Overreaction:

  • The Steelers defense has been horrible and the offense has been somewhat shaky and inconsistent throughout the first four weeks of play.

Reality:

  • The Steelers – for the past three years – have opened the season poor and slow. However, the month of October always seems to be promising with the team, reigning true in their recent huge victory on October 7th against the Atlanta Falcons.
  • James Connor has done a fine job filling in as the Steelers running back due to the contract holdout of superstar Le’Veon Bell. However, the Steelers defense is a disaster and they will need to either make a change at defensive coordinator or bring in a solid cornerback or middle linebacker to fill the needs they have at those positions to contend.

Final verdict:

  • The Steelers will finish in the top three in the AFC.

Updated Division Predictions

AFC North: 1. Steelers 2. Ravens 3. Bengals 4. Browns

AFC South: 1. Jaguars 2. Titans 3. Texans 4. Colts

AFC West: 1. Kansas City 2. Chargers 3. Broncos 4. Raiders

AFC East: 1. Patriots 2. Dolphins 3. Jets 4. Bills

NFC North: 1.Bears/Packers, 3.Vikings, 4. Lions

NFC South: 1. Saints, 2. Falcons, 3. Panthers, 4. Bucs

NFC West: 1. Rams 2. Seattle 3. 49ers 4. Cardinals

NFC East: 1. Eagles 2. Redskins 3. Cowboys 4. Giants

RECAP: St. John Bosco 63, Orange Lutheran 28

On October 5th, the St. John Bosco Braves remained undefeated and beat Orange Lutheran 63-28 at Panish Family Stadium behind three special teams touchdowns.

The Orange Lutheran Lancers came into this highly-anticipated Trinity League matchup against the Braves ranked 10th in the nation, and they played Bosco tough for the first two and a half quarters.

Braves junior sensation DJ Uiagalelei showed out again, completing 22 of 27 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns. Uiagalelei again played clean football, with no turnovers to his name.

Five star quarterback Ryan Hilinski threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns, but the Braves kept him in check, forcing him into two interceptions on the night.

The Lancers battled hard in the first half, tying the game at 21 right before halftime on a Hilinski touchdown strike to wide receiver JoJo Hawkins, one of his two touchdown catches on the night.

However, junior receiver Tyus Poyer returned the ensuing kickoff all the way to the house with no time left on the clock before halftime, giving the Braves a 28-21 lead and all the momentum heading into the locker room.

Junior Kris Hutson then followed up Poyer’s act by returning the opening second half kickoff for a touchdown as well, one of three Braves special teams touchdowns on the night. Huston also returned the opening kickoff for a score.

Hilinski and the Lancers answered back with a scoring drive capped off by a Logan Loya touchdown, bringing the Braves lead back to 35-28.

From there however, Bosco’s offense and defense clicked simultaneously, with back-to-back throws from Uiagalelei to Huston for touchdowns and a George Holani 40-yard touchdown run. The Braves finished the game with a 63-28 commanding victory.

A great second half performance from both units gives Bosco some great confidence heading into this week’s matchup of the year against rival Mater Dei.

Both teams are ranked at the top of the nation, with Bosco getting the majority of votes for the number one spot. The game will be the ultimate test for both teams, who are both in contention for a national championship at the end of the year.

The game will be played at the Santa Ana Bowl on October 12th, and both schools expect limited seating, so get your tickets in advance.

It’s Mater Dei week at Bosco, and it’s time for the Braves to assert their dominance as the number one team in the nation in high school football this year.

The Trinity League: The Toughest High School Football League in America

by Caleb Wiley

Number one ranked St. John Bosco came into their season with national championship expectations, and have so far been undefeated heading into their toughest stretch of the year in the Trinity League.

Coming in with high hopes for a national championship run this year, the Braves did not take long to get things rolling. In their home opener and first game played in their new stadium, the Braves routed Timpview High School from Utah 49-0.

“It went great, the guys were super excited to open the new stadium up and we had a lot of energy. It definitely showed out there,” said Offensive Coordinator Steven Lo.

Not only did the Braves showcase their explosive offense in the opener, but the defense had an incredible outing as well, shutting out Timpview. Being the fifth ranked team in the state of Utah, Timpview is no joke either. Bosco came out and put on a display of complete dominance.

The very next game, the Bosco football team did more of the same as they beat Garces Memorial 56-0. This game was truly another exhibition of how much of a complete team they are on both sides of the ball. The offense and defense were near perfect once again, scoring points rapidly while shutting down the opponent defensively.

Bosco made it clear why they were highly anticipated to be a top team in the nation at the beginning of the year. The scoring differential through their first two games was 105-0, in favor of the Braves. The team has really come together and become a family, trusting each other on and off the field.

The next few games haven’t been much different, as Bosco outscored their opponents 164-46 following this.

“I give most credit to both the offensive and defensive line. The reason why there are shutouts and not a lot of offensive output from the other team is because of our D-line. On the other hand, DJ [Uiagalelei] has only been sacked 2 times and our RB’s have huge holes to run through,” said Coach Lo.

Bosco finally headed into league play with an undefeated record of 5-0. However, the team plays in the Trinity League, highly regarded as the best league for high school football in the nation.

“It’s the toughest league in America, hands down,” said Coach Lo.

There is not going to be any given wins in this league, with no one ranking below number 35 in California. Top to bottom, no team can be taken lightly. St. John Bosco and Mater Dei are literally the top two teams in all of high school football.

“I’m feeling good about the team, I mean we should win league with no problem, not even Mater Dei,” said linebacker Spencer Lytle.

The Braves have already defeated JSerra in their first league game, by a final score of 35-28 last Friday. It was a tough test from JSerra that the Braves had to weather, and they ultimately got the job done.

Bosco now heads into its toughest stretch of the season, taking on Orange Lutheran this Friday at Panish Family Stadium. They follow this game up with the game of the season against Mater Dei in Santa Ana on October 12th. These two games will most likely determine the outcome of the Braves season and if a national championship is still in the realm.

MLB Postseason Preview: October is Here

by Kyle Moates and Caleb Wiley

The start of October means the start of postseason MLB baseball, and we’re in for a wild ride this month.

Already, the top team in the National League and World Series favorite Chicago Cubs were knocked off last night in a wild card game against the Colorado Rockies.

The Cubs lost 2-1 against the Rockies in 13 innings in a game that was a pitching clinic from both teams. This Cubs team had a lead in their division heading in to September, but ended up blowing that lead and letting the Milwaukee Brewers claim the NL Central title on the last day of the regular season.

The Cubs players were surely worn out by the time of the playoffs, as they had played 37 games in the last 39 days of the season. The lack of energy from the Cubs showed throughout the game, as even All-Star catcher Wilson Contreras caught cramps mid-game.

The Rockies fought hard and earned a big-time victory, as #Rocktober is now in full force. The Rockies will head to first place Milwaukee to take on the Brewers now in the NL Divisional Series.

In the American League, it appears as if the Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees are heavy favorites to come out of the AL and head to the World Series.

The Astros have an all-around extremely talented roster, as behind starting pitchers Dallas Keuchel and Justin Verlander they have seen success. Shortstop Carlos Correa, outfielder George Springer, and last year’s AL MVP Jose Altuve lead the charge for the Astros at the plate. The Astros will take on the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS.

The New York Yankees find themselves in a wildcard position this year due to the historical season the Red Sox have had. The Yankees have had an amazing season themselves, but their success has been severely overlooked due to the Red Sox total domination. Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, and Gary Sanchez lead the charge at the plate for the Yanks, who have produced runs at a high rate this year. The issue with the Yankees this year has been pitching, as CC Sabathia has been off and ace Masahiro Tanaka hasn’t been special. The Yankees take on the Oakland Athletics in an AL Wildcard game this Wednesday.

The Boston Red Sox are having one of the best seasons in MLB history record-wise, winning 108 games. The Sox are stacked behind several offensive stars and two AL MVP candidates in outfielders Mookie Betts and J.D Martinez. They’ve had a fantastic bullpen all season long, as well as a star-studded rotation in Chris Sale and former Cy Young winner David Price. They had the best record in baseball this year since the 1986 New York Mets and will take on either the Yankees or A’s in the ALDS.

The Los Angeles Dodgers now have a great chance of coming out of the National League and making a World Series appearance with the Cubs premature exit. Trade deadline acquisitions in infielders Manny Machado and Brian Dozier are big boosts for LA. The one thing that sets the Dodgers apart from everyone else is their quest for revenge. After losing to the Houston Astros in the World Series last year, the Dodgers are grinding for another chance to bring home a championship to LA.

High quality baseball is here and it continues tonight with the New York Yankees and Oakland A’s in the AL wildcard series.

RECAP: St. John Bosco 35, JSerra 28

by Ethan Piechota

The number one ranked St. John Bosco Braves defeated the JSerra Lions on Friday in their Trinity League opener behind four touchdowns from George Holani.

Welcome to the Trinity League. A quest for a national championship is never easy through one of the best leagues in high school football across the country.

It wasn’t a pretty win from the Braves last night, but the most important thing to realize at this time of the year is that they got the win and battled through some intense adversity from a talented JSerra squad.

The Braves led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, credited by an early George Holani touchdown, one of four on the night for the senior running back.

In the second quarter, the Lions came out firing and dropped 21 unanswered points on the Braves, tying up the game at 21 heading into the half.

In the third quarter, the Braves came out and on their second drive, quarterback DJ Uiagalelei connected with Holani on a 15-yard touchdown strike, giving the Braves a 28-21 lead.

The Braves defense held strong for pretty much the entire quarter and almost the entire rest of the game after that, showing their true talent and potential on that side of the ball.

Holani would put the icing on the cake for the Braves, running through the entire JSerra student body, faculty, staff, players, and alumni with a beast mode-esque run for a 57-yard score, giving the Braves a 35-21 lead in the fourth quarter.

Holani finished the game with a ridiculous stat-line of 24 carries for 158 yards and 3 touchdowns, also adding two catches for 30 yards and a score in the passing game.

In a game where junior five-star quarterback DJ Uigalelei struggled a bit, Holani stepped up and delivered the game of his career for the Braves, guiding them to victory.

However, Bosco was sloppy on special teams and the defense underperformed in the first half, which is something that will need to be cleaned up heading into the coming weeks against top Trinity League opponents in Orange Lutheran and Mater Dei.

Mater Dei is coming off a stellar victory over top-ranked IMG last week and a beatdown of Servite this week, showing their talent. Bosco needs to deliver a good performance on both sides of the ball next week against Orange Lutheran to show they’re ready for the Monarchs in Santa Ana on October 12th.

Orange Lutheran QB Ryan Hillinski will provide a test for the Braves top-ranked defense next week, and it’ll be interesting to see how they fare against him at home at Panish Family Stadium.

At the end of the day, the Braves are still the top team in the nation and undefeated, and with a national championship on their minds, it’s going to take a lot to knock off this talented group going forward.

Mater Dei vs IMG: The Game of the Referees

by Nikolas Molina and Elliston Ospina

On Friday, September 21st, top-ranked IMG came over from across the country in Florida to take on the #3 Mater Dei Monarchs in the game of the year so far.

This was easily one of the most publicized matches in the nation this year for football. Every seat was sold and many coaches and scouts were in attendance from all places, coming to see all the talents showcasing their skill. Many viewers tuned into the game to see the combined 50 players with full-ride scholarships take the field.

Mater Dei took the field led by junior quarterback Bryce Young, senior receiver Bru McCoy, and talented running back Sean Dollars. With a 3-1 record, Mater Dei needed this win to regain their status as the top team in football in the nation.

On the opposing side, IMG Academy was running on a 46-game win streak, carried by talented RBs Noah Caine and Tre Sanders. Having 26 players with FBS offers, this team is complete with no holes on their depth chart.

This game was as good as advertised, with no team having a bigger lead then seven points throughout. It was very even match-up, as IMG finished with 413 total yards and 405 for Mater Dei. With teams matching up pound-for-pound, the players were chirping the whole game, heating things up. Things were getting too physical for the refs, as they ended up ejecting two IMG players.

The game was a flag fest, as the two teams combined for 30 penalties each, resulting in big yards and returning big plays. On one play, IMG took back a 75-yard punt return, only to have it called back due to holding.

IMG scored the first points and led 7-0 in the second quarter with 11:14 left in the half. The Monarchs responded immediately thanks to a personal foul on IMG on fourth down. The penalty extended a 58-yard drive that was eventually capped off with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Young to McCoy. However, simple mistakes caused the extra point to be blocked and instead of tying it, Mater Dei still trailed 7-6 going into halftime.

At the start of the second half, a bad snap pushed IMG back to its own one-yard line. After a short punt that gave them great field possession, Mater Dei took its first lead of the game. Following a 44-yard flea flicker pass from Young to wide open Sean Dollars, the Monarchs converted a two-point conversion pass to Mike Martinez to make it 14-7 with 10:08 left in the third.

Just two plays later, Tre Sanders exploded for IMG with a ridiculous 86-yard run to tie the game at 14.

Mater Dei came back  on their next drive and ran a successful trick play, Young looked like he was running right on a keeper, but instead lateraled the ball to junior tackle Myles Murao, who ran 14 yards untouched for a touchdown, making it 21-14 halfway through the third.

Coming right back, IMG QB David Baldwin threw a dime to receiver Michael Redding, who made a 24 yard catch for a touchdown to tie the game at 21-21 with three minutes left in the third.

After straight series of both offenses on display, the defenses for both teams finally came out and forced a punt on the next four possessions for each team. IMG seemed as if they wanted to wear down the defense with a 60-yard scoring drive, all on the ground. But Mater Dei’s defense went to work in the red zone, forcing only a field goal. This was a big play for the defense, as the offense could now win the game with a touchdown drive.

The un-phased Young finished off a 9 play, 75-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run in the last two minutes, giving Mater Dei a 28-24 lead.

Mater Dei’s defense would not let up, and secured the 28-24 victory. This was a statement win for the Monarchs, letting everyone know that despite their forfeit loss, they are still a top team in the nation.

Sports: Cross-Country Season Update

by Jalen Manson and Jake Newman

cross-country.JPG

The 2018 St. John Bosco High School Cross-Country team led by Head Coach Tim McIntosh has already participated in two meets to being their season, performing well in both.

In the first meet on September 1st, the team ran in the Jeff Nelson: High School Invitational at Griffith Park. The team ran hard and earned a hard-fought 4th place finish overall.

“It was a very tough course there at Griffith Park,” said senior team captain Zeke Delgado.

After the meet, the team dedicated a period strictly to training and getting better. Many runners had been dealing with illnesses leading up to the meet, so getting them back to 100 percent was the team’s first priority.

In their second meet of the season, the team participated in the Cool Breeze: High School Invitational, which is held at Brookside Country Club. This was a well-known meet, and had a large field of 35 teams competing.

“There was a lot of PR’s (personal records) set and we finished with a team time of 1:19:34. It was good to see that we finished with a 5 man gap of 30 seconds. This means that everyone finished very close to each other and that we really ran as team,” said Delgado.

Zeke Delgado held it down as team captain and sported a 15:41 time, coming in 21st place. The second one to finish was junior Daniel Covarrubias with a 15:42 time, and he was followed by sophomore JT McCoy, who came in with a time of 15:48.

League play starts Thursday with a huge matchup against other Trinity League powerhouses such as Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran, JSerra, Servite and Santa Margarita. The Braves will look to defend their league title from last year and continue to work on starting a new “streak” within the program.

Sports: Serena Williams Draws Controversy Yet Again At U.S. Open

by Caleb Wiley

The 2018 Women’s US Open Final ended in a controversial loss for superstar Serena Williams, another situation amplified by gender equality that took the sports world by storm.

We live in a world where in recent history, humans have been oppressed and discriminated against because of the color of their skin or their gender. It was difficult for people who were treated poorly and discriminated against to be successful in society, not to mention the harsh backlash they received for trying to break racial barriers in sports.

Athletes such as Jackie Robinson and Althea Gibson paved the way for athletes in African-American history, and sports leagues like the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) and WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) made a statement for women trying to make a name for themselves.

The 21st century really broke ground in sports for the new age of athletes. Athletes of any color and both genders have no problem getting into sports, as all that is required is skill nowadays. Coaches and management don’t care if you’re white, black, man or woman, the only thing they care about is if you can make things happen and win games.

In her most recent loss in the 2018 US Open, tennis icon Serena Williams was frustrated with how the game was being called and how she got her first two penalties.

The match was very much anticipated, as it showcased the best female tennis player of our generation in Serena Williams going up against one of the best young and upcoming players in the game; Naomi Osaka from Japan. Also, with the game being a national event and many people in attendance, there was no shortage of eyes peeled to this game.

In the beginning of the game, Serena got straight-up outplayed and was overpowered by the 20-year-old Osaka. Osaka caught the attention of the viewers, letting them know that she is the real deal and winning the first set with a commanding score of 6-2.

Early on in the second set, the game’s chair umpire, Carlos Ramos, caught Serena’s coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, sending hand signals to her from the stands, which is a code violation. Williams was consistent with claiming she did not want to be coached nor did she need it and has maintained that claim throughout. Her coach did admit to sending signals afterward. However, many coaches do end up still doing the same thing and ignoring the violation rule. Unfortunately for Williams, Mouratoglou was caught and a penalty was given to her.

Following Ramos’ call, Williams was disappointed and frankly livid at the chair umpire for thinking that she would cheat. However, the referee can only go based on what he sees, as he saw a violation and he called it right by the rule book. Now, if Serena Williams doesn’t like that rule, she can talk to the people upstairs but being frustrated at the referee for doing his job is unfair and unprofessional on her part.

Soon after, Williams received a second violation for racquet abuse which cost her a point. At this point, the fire was lit within her and she started going off on the referee on national television. Williams called Ramos a “thief” and claimed he “stole points” from her. She kept rambling on and continued to complain to the referee, and ultimately he got tired of it and issued Williams another code violation, resulting in a game penalty.

Williams wasn’t done. She continued complaining even after the game was declared over and called out the tournament supervisor and tournament referee. She even went on to tell the media that she believes that the ref was completely sexist towards her and she deals with this all the time.

There is something wrong with her statement, however. Carlos Ramos is known to be a stickler in the tennis community, and not just to women.

In August of 2016, Ramos called a code violation on Andy Murray for saying “stupid umpiring.” Another 2016 incident, Ramos called a code violation on Nick Kyrgios for yelling at the towel boy. In July of 2017, Ramos called a time violation on Andy Murray for playing too slowly. In 2018 during Wimbledon, Ramos gave Novak Djokovic a code violation for slamming his racquet on the ground.

There are many more incidents that show how strict Ramos is as a ump. Ramos isn’t to be called and declared sexist based on his actions in the US Open Final. It is very improper for Serena to pull the gender card and accuse Ramos of such an ignorant thing to say.

_103351916_serenawilliams_getty-10

Williams begins to chew out referee Carlos Ramos.

Williams was getting outworked, she got mad and went against the rules. The ump realized this and called it how he saw it, and Serena then got mad and acted like everybody was against her. She went straight to sexism as fast as this story got out. End of story.

Sure, Ramos was a little over the top. He could have handled the situation a little bit better but he is known to be a hardcore, by-the-book ump. Pulling the gender card was an easy way out of the situation for Williams, a way of not facing her problems.

The real problem in this whole situation is that everyone was so focused on Williams and Ramos’ disagreement that Naomi’s great outing and accomplishment was overlooked. The young talent faced her idol and beat the greatest player in our generation, not to mention dominating the game. Osaka was looking like she was going to win the game regardless of what happened through Ramos forfeiting Williams.
