Sports: NFL Quarterly Review

by Lucas Garrison

So far, the 2018 NFL season has been a rollercoaster ride, as teams that very few people thought would be contenders are proving everyone wrong.

NFL: Kansas City Chiefs at Denver Broncos

The Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals have all proved that they are contenders in the league this year. On the flip side, your typical top contenders such as the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles have all had shaky starts and are struggling.

Below are bold predictions for the rest of the season and some thoughts on what the NFL might look like by February.

Is the Patriots Dynasty Over?

Bill Belichick, Tom Brady

Overreaction:

  • After last season’s Super Bowl loss, the offseason was a bizarre one for the Patriots. It was leaked that the big three (Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft) were not getting along and Belichick was being cast out and seen as the bad guy. When it came to the NFL Draft, Belichick and the front office seemed to be leaking who they were looking at potentially drafting. Rob Gronkowski trade rumors surfaced, and the team seemed to be in a bad spot.

Reality:

  • In the month of September, the Patriots have always been shaky. Plus, they just added wide receiver Josh Gordon and now have veteran receiver Julian Edelman back from suspension. Expect the Patriots to be in easy playoff contention and run through the weak AFC East.

Final Verdict:

Everyone needs to calm down. It’s the New England Patriots.

Will the Buccaneers Make the Playoffs?ryan-fitzpatrick.jpg

Overreaction:

  • The Bucs are now 2-2 after starting 2-0 behind an unreal start from journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has since been relieved of his starting job by Jameis Winston.

Reality:

  • The Bucs are now giving up on “Fitz-Magic” after one bad outing. Jameis Winston aka “The Disaster” came in and on his first drive of the season, threw an interception. They will no longer be looking the way they did through the first quarter of the season with Winston at the helm and finish in contention for a top ten pick.

Final Verdict:

  • As long is Jameis is the quarterback, the Bucs won’t be a contender for anything except last place.

Will the Steelers Make the Playoffs?usatsi-10441209-antonio-brown-steelers-td

Overreaction:

  • The Steelers defense has been horrible and the offense has been somewhat shaky and inconsistent throughout the first four weeks of play.

Reality:

  • The Steelers – for the past three years – have opened the season poor and slow. However, the month of October always seems to be promising with the team, reigning true in their recent huge victory on October 7th against the Atlanta Falcons.
  • James Connor has done a fine job filling in as the Steelers running back due to the contract holdout of superstar Le’Veon Bell. However, the Steelers defense is a disaster and they will need to either make a change at defensive coordinator or bring in a solid cornerback or middle linebacker to fill the needs they have at those positions to contend.

Final verdict:

  • The Steelers will finish in the top three in the AFC.

Updated Division Predictions

AFC North: 1. Steelers 2. Ravens 3. Bengals 4. Browns

AFC South: 1. Jaguars 2. Titans 3. Texans 4. Colts

AFC West: 1. Kansas City 2. Chargers 3. Broncos 4. Raiders

AFC East: 1. Patriots 2. Dolphins 3. Jets 4. Bills

NFC North: 1.Bears/Packers, 3.Vikings, 4. Lions

NFC South: 1. Saints, 2. Falcons, 3. Panthers, 4. Bucs

NFC West: 1. Rams 2. Seattle 3. 49ers 4. Cardinals

NFC East: 1. Eagles 2. Redskins 3. Cowboys 4. Giants

RECAP: St. John Bosco 63, Orange Lutheran 28

The Orange Lutheran Lancers came into this highly-anticipated Trinity League matchup against the Braves ranked 10th in the nation, and they played Bosco tough for the first two and a half quarters.

Braves junior sensation DJ Uiagalelei showed out again, completing 22 of 27 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns. Uiagalelei again played clean football, with no turnovers to his name.

Five star quarterback Ryan Hilinski threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns, but the Braves kept him in check, forcing him into two interceptions on the night.

The Lancers battled hard in the first half, tying the game at 21 right before halftime on a Hilinski touchdown strike to wide receiver JoJo Hawkins, one of his two touchdown catches on the night.

However, junior receiver Tyus Poyer returned the ensuing kickoff all the way to the house with no time left on the clock before halftime, giving the Braves a 28-21 lead and all the momentum heading into the locker room.

Junior Kris Hutson then followed up Poyer’s act by returning the opening second half kickoff for a touchdown as well, one of three Braves special teams touchdowns on the night. Huston also returned the opening kickoff for a score.

Hilinski and the Lancers answered back with a scoring drive capped off by a Logan Loya touchdown, bringing the Braves lead back to 35-28.

From there however, Bosco’s offense and defense clicked simultaneously, with back-to-back throws from Uiagalelei to Huston for touchdowns and a George Holani 40-yard touchdown run. The Braves finished the game with a 63-28 commanding victory.

A great second half performance from both units gives Bosco some great confidence heading into this week’s matchup of the year against rival Mater Dei.

Both teams are ranked at the top of the nation, with Bosco getting the majority of votes for the number one spot. The game will be the ultimate test for both teams, who are both in contention for a national championship at the end of the year.

The game will be played at the Santa Ana Bowl on October 12th, and both schools expect limited seating, so get your tickets in advance.

It’s Mater Dei week at Bosco, and it’s time for the Braves to assert their dominance as the number one team in the nation in high school football this year.

Bosco: Club Carnival a Success

by Lucas Agatep

On September 13th and 14th, St. John Bosco held its annual club sign-ups out in the quad, where students explored the different clubs available to join on campus.

Mrs. Jen Schnorr, who organized the club day, viewed that the two days went well. For being a new staff member, the club day happened to be Mrs. Schnorr’s first time organizing a club sign-up at Bosco.

Schnorr was able to do this years club day by taking her experiences from her prior school and building on them. Without any reference on what Bosco has done on past club sign-up days, she was able to successfully set up an informative and interactive club carnival.

Clubs ranging from culture to other curricular activities were available for students on Bosco’s campus to join. There seemed to be a club for every student’s likings and interests.

Right now, there are 38 active clubs at Bosco for students to join, either for self-entertainment or educational purposes. Though not all 38 clubs were present the two days, the ones that were presented offered interesting choices for students.

“The majority of students join clubs because clubs are something fun and something to participate in extracurricularly. Academic clubs are very important as well, so the students that are more academically minded and interested or thinking about college have options there as well,” said Schnorr.

From the amount of students that were at the club sign-ups, it is clear that the first club meet-ups will be an overall success. The only general issue for clubs are for the members to remain active and participate at all times throughout the school year.

“[The clubs] main goal right now is going to be to start off strong, maintain the students within the club, and have active meetings throughout the school year, because that is always the difficult challenge,” said Mrs. Schnorr.

Clubs are an intricate and important part of Bosco’s community and student life here on campus, and students participating and taking part in the meetings year-round is beneficial to both the students and leaders of the respective clubs.

Bosco: New Black Student Union

by RJ Johnson

Discussion of a Black Student Union on St. John Bosco’s campus has been up for several years, on and off with no one truly taking initiation to get the club started.

With St. John Bosco being such a diverse community and rich in cultural clubs such as Filipino Club, Spanish Culture Club and more, a club to represent African-American culture and pride seemed to be missing.

St. John Bosco senior students Parker Grey and Cole Grey have taken the role of getting a BSU started here on campus.

“I think it will definitely bring a better understanding of everyone’s culture at the school, because it’s such a diverse community as it is, also while treating our differences as a positive instead of a negative,” said Cole Grey.

What Cole believes is important, as he stresses that true social acceptance is better than just tolerance alone.

Today’s society is built around this acceptance, and places where it is absent are the places humans struggle the most. From lack of acceptance grows ignorance that a Black Student Union could help rid within the student body.

“I saw that the Brave community in general doesn’t know how it feels to be an African-American in today’s society, and there are people uneducated on the topic of the struggles they go through,” said Parker Grey.

What Parker is alluding to are the injustices done against the African-American Community, in the past and still in the present. Racial discrimination, police killings, and lack of respect for culture along with the expectation that African-Americans are supposed to just conform to prejudice standards.

These injustices aren’t only done to African-Americans, but a high percentage of minorities across America. 235 total Black and Hispanic people have been shot this year without reason besides potentially being armed. This number makes up 32 percent of police shootings total, which is alarming when Blacks and Hispanics combined make up just 29 percent of the US population.

Not only are African-American and Hispanic youth in jeopardy of being shot and killed by police, but according to the Department of Education students of these races are arrested far more often than their peers and classmates of different color.

The Department of Education’s data showed that 96,000 students were arrested and 242,000 referred to law enforcement total over the past year. Out of those students, Black and Hispanic students accounted for more than 70 percent of the students arrested or referred.

These statistics horrify parents that are minorities because of the fear and high chance that their child could end up being apart of this number. Many Hispanic and Black are generally afraid to give their children the liberties and freedom they are supposed to enjoy due to the risk out there.

When are the injustices supposed to stop? More protests spring up to counter the voice and the concerns youth are supposed to have.

The “All Lives Matter” movement came months after the start of the “Black Lives Matter” protest, with members trying to combat the “selfish” mindset behind the Black Lives Matter struggle.

Black Lives Matter is not trying to tell the world that only black lives matter, or that black lives matter more than others. The main purpose is to reach for equality, telling people that black lives matter too.

Not all who have come across the issue take time to understand it in this light. Because of this, the All Lives Matter movement appears truly insensitive and ignorant to all of the issues that Black Lives Matter is trying to present.

Black Lives Matter is fighting for true equality, while All Lives Matter already believes that they have that. This has caused plenty of confusion, splitting our country apart in several ways.

People are forced to pick a side, judging what is to be fair and unfair for both of the groups. This is an argument that sees itself in schools, offices, and workplaces all across America.

The Black Student Union is an extension of the Black Lives Matter movement, working for the understanding of true equality amongst all different races in America to St. John Bosco High School students.

The Trinity League: The Toughest High School Football League in America

by Caleb Wiley

Number one ranked St. John Bosco came into their season with national championship expectations, and have so far been undefeated heading into their toughest stretch of the year in the Trinity League.

Coming in with high hopes for a national championship run this year, the Braves did not take long to get things rolling. In their home opener and first game played in their new stadium, the Braves routed Timpview High School from Utah 49-0.

“It went great, the guys were super excited to open the new stadium up and we had a lot of energy. It definitely showed out there,” said Offensive Coordinator Steven Lo.

Not only did the Braves showcase their explosive offense in the opener, but the defense had an incredible outing as well, shutting out Timpview. Being the fifth ranked team in the state of Utah, Timpview is no joke either. Bosco came out and put on a display of complete dominance.

The very next game, the Bosco football team did more of the same as they beat Garces Memorial 56-0. This game was truly another exhibition of how much of a complete team they are on both sides of the ball. The offense and defense were near perfect once again, scoring points rapidly while shutting down the opponent defensively.

Bosco made it clear why they were highly anticipated to be a top team in the nation at the beginning of the year. The scoring differential through their first two games was 105-0, in favor of the Braves. The team has really come together and become a family, trusting each other on and off the field.

The next few games haven’t been much different, as Bosco outscored their opponents 164-46 following this.

“I give most credit to both the offensive and defensive line. The reason why there are shutouts and not a lot of offensive output from the other team is because of our D-line. On the other hand, DJ [Uiagalelei] has only been sacked 2 times and our RB’s have huge holes to run through,” said Coach Lo.

Bosco finally headed into league play with an undefeated record of 5-0. However, the team plays in the Trinity League, highly regarded as the best league for high school football in the nation.

“It’s the toughest league in America, hands down,” said Coach Lo.

There is not going to be any given wins in this league, with no one ranking below number 35 in California. Top to bottom, no team can be taken lightly. St. John Bosco and Mater Dei are literally the top two teams in all of high school football.

“I’m feeling good about the team, I mean we should win league with no problem, not even Mater Dei,” said linebacker Spencer Lytle.

The Braves have already defeated JSerra in their first league game, by a final score of 35-28 last Friday. It was a tough test from JSerra that the Braves had to weather, and they ultimately got the job done.

Bosco now heads into its toughest stretch of the season, taking on Orange Lutheran this Friday at Panish Family Stadium. They follow this game up with the game of the season against Mater Dei in Santa Ana on October 12th. These two games will most likely determine the outcome of the Braves season and if a national championship is still in the realm.

MLB Postseason Preview: October is Here

by Kyle Moates and Caleb Wiley

The start of October means the start of postseason MLB baseball, and we’re in for a wild ride this month.

Already, the top team in the National League and World Series favorite Chicago Cubs were knocked off last night in a wild card game against the Colorado Rockies.

The Cubs lost 2-1 against the Rockies in 13 innings in a game that was a pitching clinic from both teams. This Cubs team had a lead in their division heading in to September, but ended up blowing that lead and letting the Milwaukee Brewers claim the NL Central title on the last day of the regular season.

The Cubs players were surely worn out by the time of the playoffs, as they had played 37 games in the last 39 days of the season. The lack of energy from the Cubs showed throughout the game, as even All-Star catcher Wilson Contreras caught cramps mid-game.

The Rockies fought hard and earned a big-time victory, as #Rocktober is now in full force. The Rockies will head to first place Milwaukee to take on the Brewers now in the NL Divisional Series.

In the American League, it appears as if the Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees are heavy favorites to come out of the AL and head to the World Series.

The Astros have an all-around extremely talented roster, as behind starting pitchers Dallas Keuchel and Justin Verlander they have seen success. Shortstop Carlos Correa, outfielder George Springer, and last year’s AL MVP Jose Altuve lead the charge for the Astros at the plate. The Astros will take on the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS.

The New York Yankees find themselves in a wildcard position this year due to the historical season the Red Sox have had. The Yankees have had an amazing season themselves, but their success has been severely overlooked due to the Red Sox total domination. Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, and Gary Sanchez lead the charge at the plate for the Yanks, who have produced runs at a high rate this year. The issue with the Yankees this year has been pitching, as CC Sabathia has been off and ace Masahiro Tanaka hasn’t been special. The Yankees take on the Oakland Athletics in an AL Wildcard game this Wednesday.

The Boston Red Sox are having one of the best seasons in MLB history record-wise, winning 108 games. The Sox are stacked behind several offensive stars and two AL MVP candidates in outfielders Mookie Betts and J.D Martinez. They’ve had a fantastic bullpen all season long, as well as a star-studded rotation in Chris Sale and former Cy Young winner David Price. They had the best record in baseball this year since the 1986 New York Mets and will take on either the Yankees or A’s in the ALDS.

The Los Angeles Dodgers now have a great chance of coming out of the National League and making a World Series appearance with the Cubs premature exit. Trade deadline acquisitions in infielders Manny Machado and Brian Dozier are big boosts for LA. The one thing that sets the Dodgers apart from everyone else is their quest for revenge. After losing to the Houston Astros in the World Series last year, the Dodgers are grinding for another chance to bring home a championship to LA.

High quality baseball is here and it continues tonight with the New York Yankees and Oakland A’s in the AL wildcard series.

Spider-Man Swings to a 10/10

by Nick Hernandez

Marvel’s Spider-Man was under development by Insomniac Games for over 3 years. On September 7th, 2018, fans were finally able to get their hands on the video game upon its highly anticipated release.

The PS4 exclusive game was critically acclaimed, earning outstanding support from large game reviewers such as IGN and GameSpot, rating it 8.7 and 9 out of 10 respectively.

The game received enormous amounts of hype on multiple social media outlets and fans were thrilled by all the creativity and ingenuity being put into it. The game truly lived up to all the hype and anticipation brought on it and proved to be well-worth the wait. It has been noted that the amount of detail in the game is evident, as its realistic portrayal of real-life city spaces shows that every detail had intention. Insomniac knew precisely what they were doing during their creation.

Containing over 20 hours of in-game missions and levels, gamers were kept busy by all the opportunities of campaign play and mini-games that were integrated across many areas of the virtual New York City.

Many iconic villains from the Spider-Man franchise were seen both in Story Play and Side Missions. Foes such as Doctor Octopus and the Rhino made appearances, as well as future villains such as the Green Goblin.

The fighting style of the Wall Crawler became highly praised and talked about amongst fans. From flips and kicks to his basic web-swinging throughout the city, the whole experience seemed almost surreal. There are so many possible things to do that it seems as though you’ll never get bored of completing missions like fighting crime or just simply exploring the enormous city.

In game, you are able to play as others characters and see how they grow throughout time. From the relationship between Peter Parker and aunt Mary Jane – to how the next Spider-Man, Miles Morales, came to be – there is so much to do and learn about each character. As a player, you notice the friendship between Spider-Man and the chief of police, Yuri Wantanabe, grow stronger over time. You also get to see how Peter reacts to helping out his Aunt May and the people he meets when not donning the red and blue suit.

As a sort of nod to future games and the evolution of the Marvel Gaming Universe, many other heros and characters can be seen in game and as “Easter Eggs.” Some of these characters include Doctor Strange, Sandman, Daredevil and Black Cat. It seems as though Insomniac and Marvel plan to produce sequels to this game or maybe introduce further iterations in other hero games such as Iron Man.

Overall, the game was well-liked by most all gamers who played and with proper reason, it is truly a great game. The visuals exceeded all expectations and every element of the game abides by perfect creation. Fighting is fast and intense, yet could be taken slowly and missions were creative, yet challenged all those who played.

New Teacher Q&A: Ms. Allegra Weinstein

New teacher Ms. Allegra Weinstein comes to Bosco with experience as a teacher and with people in general, bringing something unique and new to Bosco’s teaching staff and faculty.

Q: Where have you previously worked?

A: I have worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the ER and at CHOC in the cardiology ward. I was a medical scribe at both hospitals. I did research at UC Irvine at the Pediatric Exercise and Genomics Research Center. I worked on a NIH funded project looking at the effect of exercise training on children with asthma. I am currently the JV Women’s Basketball head coach at Esperanza High School. I will be starting my 8th season this year. I was a science teacher for 2 years at Halstrom Academy in Anaheim Hills.

Q: How long have you been teaching?

A: I have been teaching for 3 years.

Q: What college did you graduate from?

A: I graduated and received by BI from Claremont Graduate University.

Q: How did you come across St. John Bosco?

A: I came across Bosco by chance. I knew of Bosco’s reputation as both an elite academic and athletic school, and when there was a vacancy in the Math and Science Department, I knew I couldn’t pass up on the opportunity.

Q: What made you consider Bosco?

A: At UCI, most of my classes were in large lecture halls that held hundreds of students. While I certainly enjoyed my time there, in the classroom there were times I felt I was just another body, just a number in a large crowd. However, when I was to graduate school, my classes were much much smaller – I was on a first name basis with most of my professors! My cohort was maybe 20-30 students and I felt surprisingly at ease being in a more intimate setting. It truly made a difference in my educational experience.

This intimate, close-knit, family-like community was something that I truly appreciated. This is way I started my teaching career at Halstrom. It is a private high school which has embraced the philosophy of a 1-on-1 model. Teaching there gave me the opportunity to work with students from all walks of life, with varying learning styles and with varying disabilities. Because of the unique format at Halstrom, I developed equally unique relationships with my students.

I came to Bosco because I value its sense of comradery, love, sodality and spirit. It reminds me of my respective communities in graduate school and at Halstrom. “Brotherhood is the very price and condition of man’s survival.” – Carlos P. Romulo

Q: What are your particular hobbies?

A: My hobbies are basketball, hiking, going to museums, and spending time with friends and family.

Q: Do you have any siblings?

A: I have one younger sister, Andrea.

Q: What is your personal taste in music and who is your favorite artist?

A: I love all types of music except heavy metal. The one artist that I can always listen to, regardless of what mood I’m in, is John Mayer.

Q: What sport do you like and what is your favorite team if you have any?

A: My favorite sport is basketball and my favorite teams are the Lakers, Duke, and now Bosco!

Q: Currently, what do you think of Bosco and your students?

A: I’m enjoying my time at Bosco. The faculty, particularly those in my department, have been so kind and generous with their time and help. I’m not sure what I could do without them. Everyone has made me feel very welcome into the Bosco community. My students have been great. While I may have to be disciplinarian in some classes more than others (cough, PERIOD 6, cough, cough), the students overall are good-hearted and make me feel blessed to be a Bosco Brave.

Q: Compared to your prior school, what is different and similar to Bosco?

A: One of the main differences between Bosco and Halstrom, where I previously taught, is the classroom setting – Halstrom has a 1-on-1 philosophy and Bosco is a more traditional setting. Bosco’s setting and schedule is what I am most familiar with, particularly as a student, and so it is nice to settle into a routine. However, one aspect that I truly love about each campus is their spirit, friendship, and connectivity.

Q: Did you participate in any sports or clubs in High School?

A: In high school, I played basketball for all 4 years and participated in PTSA. I also volunteered at St. Jude Hospital.
