Around Bosco: Students Reflect On Their Faith At Youth Day 2020

by Ryan Tavera

Last Thursday, St. John Bosco students were given the chance to share their faith with thousands of different students from around the country at Youth Day 2020.

“Hopefully, the students who were involved left inspired and challenged to live as missionary disciples in their homes, schools, parishes, and communities,” said Brother Quang.

Twenty fortunate students went to Anaheim for the day, to see other kids their age who come from many different backgrounds all throughout the Archdiocese.

The staff and students were able to experience many unique workshops that focused on a certain aspect of life and how God can guide one through rough conditions. Bosco students found themselves in front of Bob Perron, an advocate of his faith and speaker. Perron’s workshop dealt with relationships and if they are really worth the risk many go through to maintain them.

“Let’s face it, relationships can be tough. To be a good friend requires our willingness to be vulnerable and let someone really see us as we are with our gifts, our talents, and our unique weirdness. Yet, in the end, friendship is worth it,” said Perron.

Perron talked to the youth for a little over an hour explaining the key details that make up a relationship and how God makes every one of us in his own way to have an impact on the relationships we construct throughout our lives.

As for Perron he was a man of emotion and displayed how he felt at all times while on stage. Perron spoke clearly and with perspicacity, all in all, the workshop was a very enjoyable experience for all involved.

After Perron’s workshop students were led to the main building where mass was being held. Students were greeted with sweet air conditioning, comfortable seats and beautiful art made by Bosco’s very own Mrs. Macrae. Other students rushed onto the stage and explained the theme for Youth Day  “Through God’s eyes,” which emphasized youth seeing themselves through God’s eyes, rather than through the shallow gaze of social media and other forms of peer pressure.

Shortly after Doug Tooke walked onto the stage where he shared his story to 7,000 young people. Tooke drove home the fact that “Holiness is hard,” in his 40-minute speech, Tooke continued to explain the problem between young people and their faith.

“There’s a generation of people who have no idea of what this mystery even is they don’t know the beauty they don’t know it’s about their story and the churches story they don’t know about surrounding to be a vessel for the eucharist because you and I don’t tell them,” said Tooke.

Following Tooke’s powerful speech, Archbishop Jose H. Gomez, stepped onto the stage to begin mass. The mass was filled with music and bright lights, but the most important was the liturgy, which effectively invites us into prayer that deepens our relationship with Christ.

The mass ended with an explosion of music, lights, singing, and cheering. Youth day ended with Students feeling enlightened and open-minded.

A+E: Roddy Ricch’s newfound fame and publicity draws the envy of former superstars Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez

by Joshua Whitfield

Roddy Ricch has become one of the most popular rappers over the past couple of months through his intelligent social media tactics, and catchy songs.

  roddy

In 2019 new upcoming rapper Roddy Ricch dropped his most successful album to date titled “Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial”. This album featured 16 songs and was released on December 6, 2019, on all major streaming platforms. It would soon take the nation by storm and put his name on the map, thanks to the help of the second song on his album titled “The Box”.

“The Box” for two consecutive weeks held The Billboard Hot 100 spot above two other major artists namely Justin Bieber’s “Yummy” and Selena Gomez’s “Rare”. They were neck and neck, but neither of the artists could overtake Roddy Ricch’s new fame and publicity.

Justin Bieber released “Yummy” January 3, 2020, and was expecting to topple over “The Box” and take the number 1 spot, yet it didn’t happen. “Yummy”, which is also the name of the album, had the utmost importance for Justin Bieber. Overtaking Roddy Ricch turned into a social media fiasco and Bieber told his audience of over 120 million on Instagram to stream on Spotify and raise his song to number one. Justin Bieber on Instagram Live had him lying down while begging his followers to go listen to “Yummy”.

“Stream Yummy like please,” said Justin Bieber on his Livestream.

As Justin Bieber tried to share and publicize loopholes to get his recent project to the number 1 spot, his direct competition Roddy Ricch tweeted out on January 11 to go and listen to Justin’s “Yummy”. This promotion that Roddy gave him gathered so much attention, with 25,000 retweets and 138,000 likes on twitter.

“Stream yummy by Justin Bieber,” said Roddy Ricch.

This had the opposite effect of what it was meant for and it just put artist Roddy Ricch in a better light than Justin Bieber because even though Justin tried to get ahead of him in a very underhanded way, he still supported Justin. This indirect support for Justin turned into more support for Roddy Ricch because more people streamed his new hit “The  Box” more than before. This kept him ahead of someone who used very blatant manipulation techniques to game the system for his own benefit.

Justin Bieber was not the only one to be outshined as “The Box” dominated the charts, artist Selena Gomez participated in these very petty social media outbursts to increase her ranking.

Selena Gomez released her new album called “Rare” on January 10, to then turn to Instagram in the exact same way as Justin did. Selena on Instagram live said to her 169 million followers to go stream her album.

“I would love for the most important album I’ve ever released to become number one, so if you don’t mind streaming it or listening to it on all the platforms it would mean the absolute world to me,” said Selena.

Selena didn’t go as far as Justin did, but Selena had to beg for fans to stream her album to overtake an artist who is on the rise. Selena a few days later would go on to Instagram live with her and three friends to go on a run to three local convenience stores to buy the album herself, so it would count towards her overall sales.

“Am I kind of desperate for doing this, I don’t care, I don’t care,” said Selena.

Unlike Justin, for a moment Selena overtook Roddy Ricch and came out on top with her album at the number one spot. Many people expressed on social media how she lost respect from a lot of people because of the clear desperation that was shown to get her album to number one and the methods she used to do so. As well as how her competition Roddy Ricch tweeted out to stream Selena Gomez’s album the same way he did with Justin Bieber.

Unbeknownst to Roddy, his clear support of his direct competition had the opposite effect and gave him more publicity, streams, and a better PR after the fact. People know Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez gave up their dignity to get more sales, yet a recently popular rapper who had hit the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in his career, defeated them by trying to help.

Sports: Braves Swim Looks To Upperclassmen To Carry Load

by Joshua Lucero

Head coach Jeff Powers expects the best out of all his players on the 2020 Braves swim team in order to qualify for CIF.

bosco-swimming-white-icon

In order to achieve the team’s goals they are at a disadvantage, they have been faced with a dilemma with a pool that has been shut down for two weeks. The pump that heats up the pool has broken, the new piece should be available on February 12, 2020, and they will be able to have a full practice by February 13, 2020. With this set back they have been doing dry practices, which are running, lifting, jumps, isometrics, and anything else relating to swimming. This can be a setback with their first swim meet in two weeks. Nevertheless, Coach Powers is optimistic.

“We will do well because of the quick swimmers we have and dominate in non-league. In the league, we have a shot to place in the top three but the top two will be a challenge,” said Coach Powers.

The only real challenge is to get the swimmers back into shape, once the hard work pays off the team will be able to compete to their best ability.  This year Coach Powers will be depending on all of his top swimmers to compete in butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, and freestyle. He then believes his team will excel in butterfly, backstroke, and backstroke.

This new team consists of a handful of seniors, Ryan Mowl, Jack Peirce, Gabriel Garcia, and Luke Garrison, and a majority of younger classmen. The major difference from last year’s team and currently this 2020 year is experience.

“The seniors who have graduated left big shoes to fill,” said Coach Powers.

He is very confident in his new players, with the right coaching and dedication from his players this new team may be young but will have a fighting chance with the help of the seniors.

Bosco swim has a small number of 23 participants on their team, compared to other schools such as Santa Margarita who have more than 80 swimmers and Mater Dei who have around 40.  Coach Powers knows that this disadvantage of numbers comes with a price, but is confident that his top players can compete. One player can not do it all and as Coach Powers looks to his 2nd and 3rd place swimmers.

“Ours is a little bit behind compared to the other teams but they do have the potential to work hard and win meets,” said Coach Powers.

Players like Ryan Mowl, Joshua Joson, Jack Pearce and anyone else who is willing to put in the work will have a major role in leading the team throughout the season.

Expectations are high for all the seniors, as they have been on the team for four years and know what meets they are going to qualify for. For Gabrial Garcia, he is a four-year veteran with the swim team and his favorite events are the 200 meter IM, 100m freestyle, and any of the relays.

One of the younger players who have been working hard and staying in shape is Joshua Joson, a sophomore. Coach Powers believes his hard work and dedication can be a strength that the team will be able to feed off of.

“We expect to place top three as long as we keep our head straight and work hard,” said senior Jack Pearce. Who swims in the 200 freestyle, 100 fly, 4 by 400 free relay, 2 by 50 IM relay. Jack is one of the seniors that coach Powers will be relying on in order to have a good season.

This year Coach Powers is placed with the difficulty to create champions out of a young team but with hard work and dedication on both sides, this underdog team will have a shot to place in the top three in arguably the toughest high school league in the nation.

Around Bosco: Feast Day of St. John Bosco

by Johnathan Gonzalez, Kristopher Leal

The Feast Day of St. John Bosco is a day that brings the saint back to life and brings him with the children of his school. St. John Bosco’s sole purpose was to give new life and opportunities for disadvantaged youth and delinquents by giving them a home, a place to learn and opportunities that they would have never had.

BoscoFeast

His patron is of apprentices, editors and publishers, schoolchildren, magicians, and juvenile delinquents. On January 31, The Feast Day was a day dedicated to celebrating John Bosco.

The Feast Day is a very special occasion for St. John Bosco high school and allows for the students to truly understand what it means to be apart of the Bosco community. Mr. Avila, the director of student activities, recognizes the significance of the day and what it means for St. John Bosco and the Bosco community.

“It’s our Patron Saints Feast Day. It’s special because it’s sort of like a birthday and it’s a celebration of his life,” said Mr. Avila.

Following the student’s shortened classes, the day began with the Feast Day mass. This mass featured the new Archbishop Savio Hon Tai-Fai from Hong Kong, which was very interesting for each of us that took part. He is a Roman Catholic archbishop and the nuncio of the Holy See to Greece. The Bishop spoke about many life stories that the Braves enjoyed. In the ending portion of the mass, a senior named Noah Quezada stepped on the stage and took one for the Braves and politely asked the Bishop for a school day off, the Bishop thought about what he said and he decided it was a great idea to give us Braves a day off (That day has been decided to be placed in the month of March).

“I’m from Taiwan and knowing a man from Asia is here representing the church is nice to know, not only I am the only one along with the other exchange students coming to Bosco in a Catholic manner,” said Leo Lung.

Following the mass, there were many activities for the students to enjoy. This year Mr. Avila found that going with popular activities was the best option for the Braves. Avila explained that after the mass there were going to be a lot of fun activities for the Braves to take part in such as inflatables, a velcro wall, human foosball which the freshman loved and a few other sports going on around on the field and even gaming in the Learning Commence room. Something new that happened was  Mr. Mestas hosting a flag football game for all grade levels to join in.

“It was a cool thing all in all being the fact that it’s my last Saint John Bosco Feast Day as a high school student and being able to get away from school and hang out with my friends and just mess around was cool,” said Senior Luis Guiterrez.

After the Mass, the Braves were happy to be given free Porto’s pastries. We spoke to some students and they seemed to enjoy themselves after the Mass.

News/OP-ED: Sanders Emerges as Frontrunner, Buttigieg Leads Moderate Lane

by Timothy Levine, Executive Editor

With the results of both the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary being released, Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders stand apart from the field in a tier of their own with Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren having disappointing showings.

bernie-sanders-pete-buttigieg-01

The Iowa Caucuses took place in Iowa on February 3, 2020. Normally, the night of the Caucus would be full of speeches going over each candidate’s results, however, the results were delayed and America had to wait six days until 100 percent of the results were reported.

The Iowa Caucus result delay stems from the integration of a new app The Iowa Democratic Party commissioned Shadow Inc., a for-profit technology company, to build according to The New York Times. This app was supposedly plagued with “coding” errors and many volunteers helping to run the caucus were unfamiliar with how to log in and use the app. The party stated that these issues caused “inconsistencies with the reports” and the investigation required time, which led to the delay according to Vox.

With the results now 100 percent reported, Pete Buttigieg can finally be declared the winner with 13 delegates and 26.2 percent of the votes. He holds the slimmest edge over Senator Bernie Sanders with twelve delegates and 26.1 percent of the votes. These two are in a tier of their own with Senator Elizabeth Warren and Former Vice President Joe Biden falling behind with eight and six delegates respectively. The only other delegate awarded went to Senator Amy Klobuchar who garnered 12.3 percent of the vote. Candidates Andrew Yang and Tom Steyer left Iowa empty-handed with zero delegates each.

The New Hampshire primary took place this Tuesday with results quickly following polls closing that evening, unlike the debacle that was Iowa. With the results currently at 98 percent reported, network projections have given Sanders the win with 25.7 percent of the votes and nine delegates. A strong showing from Buttigieg, following his momentum from Iowa, gave him a strong second-place showing with 24.4 percent of the vote and nine delegates as well, thanks to New Hampshire’s tier rules with delegate distribution. The only other candidate to gain delegates was Klobuchar with 19.8 percent of the votes and six delegates in a rather surprising showing for her, surging to third place.

Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden both failed to gain any delegates with less than ten percent of the votes and finishing in fourth and fifth respectively.  This is very disappointing to both campaigns, as they hoped to pick up momentum for later primary elections. Biden, who was once considered the heavy frontrunner, is now in fifth place in total delegates and will need to win big in upcoming primaries.

In other primary news, Andrew Yang has officially suspended his campaign following poor showings in both Iowa and New Hampshire. A long-shot candidate, Yang was able to surpass many career politicians in terms of fundraising and polling, however, these frustrating results for the Yang campaign give him no clear path forward to win this primary election.

The next primary election will be held in Nevada in the form of a caucus on February 22. Nevada awards 48 delegates, 36 of which are pledged based on the results of the caucuses. This will be an important state to win to gain momentum going into Super Tuesday, where 1357 delegates will be up for grabs.

Sports: Braves Wrestling Looks to Continue Dominance Heading into Individual Run to State

by Hunter Richardson

The Bosco Braves’ athletic domination continues with the wrestling squad who took the Trinity League and CIF Title in two massive wins over familiar championship contender Servite Friars.

IMG_4365

Bosco wrestling has claimed the CIF and Trinity League Titles in stellar performances winning each match by a large margin. The Braves wrestling squad took the win over Servite in both championship matches to secure the big-time wins for this program and continue the dominance that Braves athletics has had across the board so far this year. The Trinity League title win gave the Braves a huge belief going into the CIF Duals that they would easily take care of business.

The CIF Duals for the Braves began with an absolute dismantling of Norco in the Quarterfinals by a score of 72-6 followed by a 63-18 blowout win over Villa Park in the Semifinals. Then it was time for the Finals and as expected it was against the league rival Servite Friars. The Braves must have had supreme confidence going into the match knowing that they were better and that they could secure the victory. Some tricky tactics by Servite coaching gave them an early lead in the match. For the first time all season the Braves wrestling team had to face some adversity. But as expected, the Braves battled back and ran through the rest of the match securing the CIF title by a score of 50-26.

This year of accolades for Braves athletics continues to stockpile with football, soccer, basketball, and now wrestling. The wrestling team has been a staple for Bosco athletics over the years winning multiple championships and Trinity League titles. So this year is not off the trend for the Braves Wrestling Squad that continues to assert their dominance across California year after year in the Trinity League.

The Braves have nationally recruited Wrestlers such as Senior Nathan Haas who is committed to Nebraska which is in arguably the best conference in college wrestling, the Big Ten. He is the headlining wrestler to watch for during Individuals. The Braves Wrestlers began their individual runs this past Friday in the Trinity League Individual Championships. The Braves sent thirteen wrestlers and all of them qualified for CIF with eight first-place Finishers, three second-place finishers, and two third-place finishers.  These wrestlers will have a chance to compete for themselves in the CIF Individuals and then the CIF Masters. If the Braves come through with victories at these events then Braves wrestling will be strongly in contention for an individual state team title.

Life of a Brave: “Senioritis” Strikes Again

by Emilio Ceja

All of the hard work done for four years of high school by students can in some cases mean nothing if they catch “senioritis”.

_DSC9584

All of the good grades, outstanding GPA’s, and credit for classes can be looked over and ignored if students continue through the last months of high school with this epidemic. The unwillingness to do work the second semester of senior year can not only mean lower grades for students but can also bring much larger consequences to the table.

Throughout my years at St. John Bosco I have seen many seniors change from their academically achieving selves into the sweatpants wearing, sandals rocking, seniors that no longer care about the whole highschool appeal. Many of these seniors sometimes do not realize the real harm that they can cause to their own future by not doing the often simple work that is assigned to them. Once accepted into colleges, the colleges themselves have the ability to revoke your acceptance if your grades are not adequate to maintain acceptance. For many this can be unknown, once they realize the guidelines, it is too late for anything to change and they are stuck without the option to attend a university that they didn’t intend on choosing.

In order to fully understand the mindset behind students and faculty at Bosco and their opinions on what is “senioritis”, I first had to understand what senioritis actually is. According to the oxford dictionary, senioritis is, “a supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school or college, characterized by a decline in motivation or performance.” The decline in grades and effort in school by the high school seniors can be seen through their mediocre work on assignments and lack of care for certain policies such as school uniform and facial hair policies at Bosco. Although not reaching certain extremes that can be seen in other schools or in prior years at Bosco, I believe that if students are not careful with how far they let this senioritis go, they will not be ready for the rude awakening that is to come.

The head counselor at Bosco, Miss. Skipper has been a counselor at other high schools and colleges prior, so she knows all about the negative effects of senioritis. Senioritis is often seen primarily during the last semester or couple months of high school or college but can begin prior to that. Even starting to lose motivation as soon as the end of the first semester.

“Sometimes the second they get that first college acceptance, they’re so relieved that they immediately feel like they don’t need to do anything else.”, Said Miss. Skipper.

Although common among students our age, we must make sure that the senioritis this year is not one that will ruin or hinder anyone’s college aspirations. The students must know the consequences prior to their actions or lack of actions in classes that are required to pass or get a certain grade to keep their acceptance from colleges. If this information is passed on to the seniors of this year and upcoming seniors, then maybe the sweats and sandals will be a thing of the past and students will finish off highschool just as strong as they started it.

News/Op-Ed: CoronaVirus

by Ryan Tavera and Joshua Whitfield

The spread of a new disease, 2019-nCoV, widely referred to as the coronavirus has undoubtedly taken the world by storm. The coronavirus originated in Wuhan, China and is currently challenging scientists who are struggling to officially find the source of the virus, although they believe it to be the selling and eating of bats in Wuhan, China.

Image result for Johns Hopkins CSSE live map

“When you look at the genetic sequence of the virus, and you match it up with every known coronavirus, the closest relatives are from bats,” said Dr. Peter Daszak, president of EcoHealth Alliance, an environmental health non-profit organization.

The virus has proven to be contagious affecting up to 17,000 people and already killing 362 people as of Monday according to Johns Hopkins CSSE live map.

See the map here.

What does this all mean though for people living in the United States? Well if you are worried about the virus spreading it already has been confirmed in the U.S with 6 cases as of Thursday.  To prevent the further spreading of the virus the infected are being quarantined and treated.

In recent news, a plane carrying 210 U.S. citizens was issued to evacuate from Wuhan, China after the sudden outbreak. The plane ended up taking the passengers to the March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County, California where passengers are going to be quarantined two weeks.

Considering a plane was evacuated from China holding 200 passengers what does this mean for other American flights to and from China?

US airlines have already begun to suspend flights to China, a different approach when compared to other major airlines which have banned flights completely to China. These include British Airways, Air India, Indonesia’s Lion Air, and South Korea’s Seoul Air and many more that have decided that the best course of action is to cut off travel for the meantime.

In addition to countries already being on the verge of cutting travels to China, the W.H.O. (World Health Organization) has declared during an interview on Thursday that the coronavirus is a global emergency.

“For all of these reasons, I am declaring a public health emergency of international concern over the global outbreak of the virus” says the director of the W.H.O, Tredos Adhanom.

This declaration may sway many more countries towards the cutting off of all air travel to China.

“Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems, and which are ill-prepared to deal with it” says director of the W.H.O, Tredos Adhanom.

Dr. Tredos and the W.H.O. are afraid of what the virus can mean for other countries whose health systems aren’t as advanced as other countries. The world has already seen what can happen when a virus makes contact with a county that lacks the funds for a strong health system. Back in 2014 with the Ebola virus striking West Africa and affecting up to 30,000 people and 11,000 deaths.

2019-nCoV however, is no Ebola, it presents it’s own list of problems and precautions. As the coronavirus continues to take its course, America can only prepare and protect its citizens as we continue down this long journey in search of a cure.

The coronavirus is no new enemy, on the contrary, the virus has some history behind it, but what exactly makes this virus so prominent and contagious?

The virus infected those not through the air like bacteria, but can only be transmitted through bodily exchanges like blood and/or infected person’s saliva. The common trend was for people to wear face masks in China to prevent it from getting into their nose or mouth. Yet officials say it’s actually not as effective as it seems.

The resurgence in the coronavirus has shaken the western world due to the contagiousness of the disease in China. Among one of the most infamous diseases to resurge in the last ten plus years, the coronavirus has been spread to hundreds of Americans visiting its epicenter Wuhan, Hubei Province, China and contracting the coronavirus.

In the early 2000s, the coronavirus was a notorious disease in China because of the severe symptoms and possible fatality of it. The coronavirus is classified as a SARS or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome because of its symptoms to cause difficulty breathing and severe coughing.

“Routine surgical masks for the public are not effective protection against viruses or bacteria carried in the air”, which was how “most viruses” were transmitted, because they were too loose, had no air filter and left the eyes exposed. But they could help lower the risk of contracting a virus through the “splash” from a sneeze or a cough and provide some protection against hand-to-mouth transmissions.” Dr. David Carrington told BBC News

The CDC classifies it as a virus and according to the CDC, the best way to avoid getting sick is not to wear masks but to have better general health and hygiene.

“There are currently no vaccines available to protect you against human coronavirus infection. You may be able to reduce your risk of infection by doing the following; wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands, avoid close contact with people who are sick.” said the CDC

The virus’ potency is now being felt by the rest of the world because unfortunately, US citizens were in Wuhan when the outbreak happened. This now opens the rest of the world to the risk of the coronavirus and is affecting airlines, trade, and general relations with China. This virus now has spread and shows no sign of quickly slowing down.

Sports: Dodgers Place Their Betts On 2020 Season

by Luke Garrison, Sports Editor

Dodgers add a top 5 player in baseball to help an already star-studded roster. The real question is, can the addition of Betts help the Dodgers capture a World Series title?

Image result for dodgers trade"

Last night, the news broke from ESPN that trades between the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, and an undisclosed third team(later names the Minnesota Twins), had taken place that would send Mookie Betts and David Price to the Dodgers, and Alex Verdugo to the Boston Red Sox.

Finally, after Dodger fans had been pleading with ownership, and the front office to make a blockbuster trade. Dodger fans finally had their wish granted. The Dodgers get arguably the BEST player in baseball, other than Mike Trout, on their roster. Betts has shown fans, what he can do over his very short career, in 2018 he was named AL MVP at the age of 24.

The Dodgers in the trade also get Pitcher David Price. Price over the last decade has been one of the better pitchers over that time. The only problem with Price coming over is the very large contract that he has. The 34-year-old is slated to make 32 million dollars this season. Which is a big hit to a franchise that already is struggling to stay under the luxury tax. However, the Dodgers were able to slate the trade so that the Red Sox will have to pay at least half of the remaining contract for David Price.

The Dodgers send Alex Verdugo to the Red Sox, and the Minnesota Twins send their top pitching prospect, RHP Brusdar Graterol. Many people are wondering if the Red Sox were taken for a ride because the Dodgers were able to get the second-best player in baseball and get a solid role pitcher.

In the trade, the Minnesota Twins acquired Dodgers Pitcher Kenta Maeda.

On a separate note after the Betts trade went through the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim came knocking on the door to help the Dodgers remain underneath the luxury tax. The Dodgers and Angels agreed to terms that will send OF, Joc Peterson, and RHP Ross Stripling to the Angels for INF Luis Rengifo and two other prospects to be named later.

The Angels’ front office and Angels fans have to be very excited for this move as they add a pitcher who can both start or come out of the bullpen. This is huge for the Angels as we all know that the Angels lack pitching. The other is they get power hitter Joc Peterson which adds for yet another great bat in an already power-hitting roster.

The Dodgers, after last night, have moved past the Yankees for the best odds to win the World Series, but fans will ask for a World Series title immediately, especially since Betts, is expected to opt-out of his current deal to seek more money. Most experts expect Betts to resign with the Dodgers, but don’t be surprised if he moves onto a team that will pay him top dollar.

FINAL RESULTS OF TRADES:

Dodgers receive: OF Mookie Betts, LHP David Price, INF Luis Rengifo, two prospects to be named later, cash(Via Red Sox)

Red Sox receive: OF Alex Verdugo, RHP Brusdar Graterol

Twins receive: RHP Kenta Maeda

Angels receive: OF Joc Peterson, RHP Ross Stripling

Sports: Braves Basketball Looks To Follow Footsteps Of Football

by Luke Garrison, Sports Editor

Tuesday night in Santa Ana, California, the Braves and The Team in Red face off for the trinity league title. The Braves Basketball team just like their Football team looks to take the Trinity League title away from the Team In Red.

Image result for bosco mater dei basketball"

Both teams sit with a record of 7-1, which is why no matter what happens after tonight the winner will take league, and the loser will be unable to make that single game up. Currently, the Braves are number one in the Trinity League, as their sole loss coming against the Lions of Jserra.

The Team in Red has its sole loss coming against the Braves, in an absolute clinic put on by Bosco’s leaders. The Monarchs since that game have continued to have success against several other teams, however, there have been several games in which the Team in Red struggled to pull out victories. Most notably, was their last Trinity League game against the Friars of Servite. The Team in Red did win by a score of, 63-59, but their top recruit, Devin Askew, had to put the entire team on his back. If the Team in Red wants a chance to avenge their loss earlier in the year they will need to rely more so on their players instead of just Askew.

The Team in Red will be looking to bounce back after sustaining a loss to the hand of Witney Young High School in which the Monarchs lost by a score of, 67-57.

The Braves will look to ride the hot hands of Seniors Josh Camper, Wynton Brown, and Isaiah Holm. Holm and Camper were the de facto leaders in their previous game against the Team in Red. Holm was on fire from all areas of the court as he was lights out from beyond the arc and was able to be pulling down rebounds, and could not be stopped. Holm in the last matchup was a constant force and was a walking highlight real as he put up monster dunks, insane blocks, and just hand an overall nose for the basket.

Camper, and Brown this season have shown that you can attempt to corral them both but will be unable to succeed. You may be able to keep one of them down for a short period of time, but once they find their groves they are unstoppable. Several Braves players have looked at this game, and think they can not over-hype it, but still need to come into it confident.

“They are good, very good, and we cannot psyche ourselves out. As long as we go out and do what we did last time, we should be good. Our leaders know what to do, and our role guys know what they have to do. But we are confident, and know that we must attack early,” Braves forward Jason Gagnon said.

The Braves are coming into this game with a 7 game win streak and will look to extend it to 8 games and walk out with their second straight Trinity league title.

FINAL SCORE PREDICTIONS: Braves, 65 – Team In Red, 62
