News: The Birthright Citizenship Controversy

In a recent interview with the news website Axios, President Donald Trump boldly proposed his desire to sign an executive order to effectively end the automatic right to citizenship for anyone born in the United States.

This proclamation has been met with mixed reactions, with many Americans feeling either supportive of the President’s hard stance on illegal immigration or shocked at what seems to be a slight against the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.

However, the most common response from each political aisle seems to be one of skepticism as many citizens question whether such an endeavor is even legal. President Trump believes it to be so as he told interviewers on Sunday. 

“It was always told to me that you needed a constitutional amendment. Guess what? You don’t,” he told Axios. “It’s in the process. It’ll happen, with an executive order.” 

Such an executive order would likely face legal challenges immediately. According to the 14th Amendment, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” This specific wording has led many many legal analysts to doubt that the President’s theoretical executive order would pass through the Supreme Court.

“Here we have a situation where the text of the Constitution is quite clear and the Supreme Court has interpreted it that way,” said Mr. Garrett Epps, a constitutional law professor at the University of Baltimore, in an interview with news outlet USA Today. “So, for the president to assert that he can somehow overturn the text of the amendment and Supreme Court precedent by executive order is what we would call an extravagant claim.”

However some analysts, like Yale law professor Peter Schuck, believe that, “contrary to traditional assumptions on this issue, Congress has the power under the Constitution” to end birthright citizenship. Although Mr. Schuck concedes that “is a question of interpretation.”

Nevertheless, Schuck ultimately believes that Trump “clearly cannot” end birthright citizenship with just an executive order.

 “I feel confident that no competent lawyer would advise him otherwise. This is just pre-election politics and misrepresentation and should be sharply criticized as such,” said Schuck. 

Like Mr. Schuck, many voters believe this to be an attempted maneuver by President Trump to stimulate his base by vowing to clamp down on immigration issues, due to the November midterm congressional elections being only a day away. Whether or not this will be effective or detrimental remains to be seen. Whatever the case, the President has made it clear that he plans to go through with his words as he fears that people can too easily play the current system to their advantage. 

“We’re the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years, with all of those benefits,” President Trump told Axios. “It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous. And it has to end.”

President Trump’s plan was met with swift resistance, from some even in his own party. On Tuesday, October 30th, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin, said in an interview that the president “obviously” cannot dissolve birthright citizenship via an executive order.

“You obviously cannot do that,” Ryan told WVLK, a radio station in Lexington, Kentucky. “I’m a believer in following the plain text of the Constitution, and I think in this case, the 14th Amendment is pretty clear, and that would involve a very, very lengthy constitutional process.”

The following day, President Trump fired back against Mr. Ryan, saying that he was wrong about the matter and should focus his efforts elsewhere. 

“Paul Ryan should be focusing on holding the Majority rather than giving his opinions on Birthright Citizenship, something he knows nothing about! Our new Republican Majority will work on this, Closing the Immigration Loopholes and Securing our Border!” tweeted President Trump on Wednesday, October 31st. 

Trump repeated his claim that he can eliminate birthright citizenship via executive order later Wednesday, although he said his preference would be for Congress to pass legislation ending that constitutional right.

“I’d rather do it through Congress because that’s permanent, but we can certainly do it through…I really believe we can do it through executive order,” he added, noting he had discussed the issue with legal scholars.

President Trump then referenced an immigration executive order signed by his predecessor, Barack Obama, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy he had sought to revoke. Trump suggested that if former President Obama could execute such an order, then he could end birthright citizenship through executive action as well. 

“If President Obama can get DACA approved … we can do this by executive order,” President Trump said.

Whether this is purely bluster or an actual intended action will not be known for a while. Most likely news will be released after the November elections have taken place and the political layout of Congress has been settled. All any American can do at the moment is wait and listen for news on what could potentially be one of the largest alterations of the country and it’s laws to date. 

News: Pittsburgh Synagogue Mass Shooting

On October 27th, 2018 an Anti-Semitic gunman shoots up a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, murdering eleven people and leaving six critically injured during the event.

Waking up early Saturday morning, one expects their morning to be peaceful and quiet, continuing the normal routine. This was not the case for the Jewish community in Pittsburgh, as many awoke with tragic news.

In Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill, the population of Jewish citizens are one of the largest amounts in America. A large mass of Jewish people were attending a synagogue Saturday morning, but their reception was interrupted by a crazed gunman. The gunman opened fire and killed eleven people and left six others wounded. The event being held at the synagogue was a child’s birth ceremony, but was ultimately turned into the scene of a hate crime homicide.

The Pittsburgh gunman was identified by officials as Robert D. Bowers. Robert Bowers held a history for hating against people’s beliefs and actions before committing the homicide. Bowers expressed his anger against the Jewish community and immigrants on social media before this horrible act.

Bowers decided that a perfect way to show his domination in society was to shoot up a synagogue and disturb the peace. Bowers identifies himself as a White Supremacist and a Anti-Semitic through social media platforms, posting racist images and making offensive comments towards other cultures and belief groups.

According to the New York Times, some comments made by Robert Bowers included:

“Jews are the children of Satan.”

“Trump is a globalist, not a nationalist. There is no #MAGA as long as there is a Jew.”

While the shooting took place, he yelled, “I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in,” said Bowers as he took the lives of innocent Jewish citizens.

Robert D. Bowers blamed the Jewish community for worldwide issues with criticism and prejudice.

Bowers was not killed at the scene. Authorities captured Bowers, who was already injured, and took him to a nearby hospital to get treatment for the wound. Bowers was charged with 29 criminal counts for his homicide and aggravated assault against the Jewish people. Bowers had possession of 21 guns under his name. During the violent crime, Robert used an AR-15, three handguns, and was dressed in tactical gear knowing he would draw gunfire due to him carrying weapons.

This starts a whole new discussion and again brings up the issue of gun control in America. Gun violence has been evident throughout history and has been the cause of the death of millions, and recently thousands here in the US.

Many protests have taken place with people against gun usage, and also protests have been held for people wishing to allow citizens to keep possession of guns. People who possess guns feel that they need guns to have self-protection for themselves and their family.

The United States Constitution’s Second Amendment states, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” US citizens can possess arms under the owner’s name with legal rights and a background check.

Hate crimes and discrimination continues to exist in the US and across the world, which seems to be the bigger issue. Most hate crimes exist because of different viewpoints and opinions people have towards others religious beliefs and skin color.

In the Pittsburgh shooting, the cause of the terrible incident occurred because of a man’s political views and his religious beliefs. The possession of guns remains to be an issue with many assaults and crimes being committed with arms. The Squirrel Hill community will forever mourn and remember the lives lost in the synagogue shooting, and hope for soon reform.

 

News: Pipe Bombs Intercepted In The US

According to CNN and The Washington Post, 14 pipe bombs were intercepted over the past week intended for extremely popular figures: George Soros, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Former Attorney General Eric Holder, Democratic US Rep. Maxine Waters, John Brennan, Actor Robert De Niro, Former Vice President Joe Biden, Democratic US Sen. Cory Booker, Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, Democratic US Sen. Kamala Harris, and Democratic Donor Tom Steyer.

FBI Assistant Director William Sweeney has not confirmed where the packages came from, but believes they were delivered and sent from Florida, according to CNN.

They sent the packages through a US Postal Service facility in Opa-locka, Florida, two law enforcement officials with the investigation said.

“Some were obviously in the postal system,” said Sweeney.

The US government and higher ups in America released a statement recently, clarifying the nature of the event and the latest news.

“We cannot provide additional information at this time due to the active nature of this federal investigation,” read the statement.

An examination showed shortly after that all the pipe bombs had the same construction, with some even having shards of glass in them.

The bombs were shipped in manila envelopes, wrapped in bubble wrap, with six “American Flag Forever” stamps on it. The packages were extremely suspicious before deep examination, with timers on the packages.

“Each of the [improvised explosive devices] was largely similar in design and construction; they each consisted of approximately six inches of PVC pipe, a small clock, a battery, wiring, and energetic material. Certain parts of the mailings included photographs of the target-recipients marked with a red X,” according to CNN.

There has been an arrest made in relation to this incident already. Cesar Sayoc, 56, of Aventura, Florida, was arrested Friday in Plantation.

The FBI used flahsbangs to arrest him near an Autozone in the city of Plantation. Initially, Sayoc was cooperative and said that the pipe bombs wouldn’t have hurt anyone and that he didn’t want to harm anyone.

A white van with stickers of President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and a “CNN Sucks” sticker was towed on Friday to Miramar, Florida, where the local FBI office is located. It has been reported that Sayoc was living in the car following being kicked out of his parents home.

They suspected Sayoc of making the bombs in the van, finding soldering equipment, stamps, envelopes, paper, a printer and powder.

Investigators identified Sayoc because they found his own DNA on ten of the packages and investigators were also able to track him using his cell phone signal.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Cesar Sayoc currently faces five criminal counts: interstate transportation of an explosive, illegal mailing of explosives, threats against former presidents and other persons, threatening interstate communications and assaulting current and former federal officers.

Say will reportedly face up to 48 years in prison, according to a report from ABC News.

According to CNN, Soyac was not on the Secret Service list but he had a string of arrests since the 90’s. Soyac was arrested in 2002 when he threatened to bomb the Florida Power and Light Company and plant and, stating that the potential incident “would be worse than September 11th.”

The records show a total of eight arrests, grand theft, battery, fraud and drug possession, as well as probation violations. He was arrested in 2014 and later pleaded guilty to stealing copper pipes at a Home Depot.

Sayoc has been arrested and the problem has seemingly been adverted, but more connections to the investigation could be made in the future. It was extremely fortunate that this incident and potential catastrophe was avoided.

 

News: The Terrifying Story of the Death of a Saudi Journalist

Jamal Ahmad Khashoggi, a Saudi Arabian journalist, author, and a former general manager and editor-in-chief of the Al-Arab News Channel was killed in his hotel on October 2nd. No one knows the real story of what happened.

The well known critic of the Saudi government and of both Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohammad bin Salman, and the country’s king, Salman of Saudi Arabia went missing. He also opposed the Saudi Arabian-led intervention in Yemen. On October 2nd, 2018 Khashoggi entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul but did not leave the building and had many people worried. After several news outlets started to publicize and speculate his death, Saudi officials teamed with Turkish investigators to lead an investigation inside the consulate on October 15th to discover the actual whereabouts of the journalist.          

Since then, Saudi Arabia has presented an unstable and unclear narrative of what happened to Khashoggi. After weeks of denying involvement in Khashoggi’s disappearance and claiming that Khashoggi was in fact alive and had left the building unharmed,  Saudi Arabia stated that he was killed in the Istanbul consulate, and that his death was the result of a fistfight on Friday, October 19th. The cause of death was later specified to be the result of a choke hold or strangulation by an unknown perpetrator. As a result of the initial investigation, the Saudi government fired five top officials and arrested 18 other Saudis for questioning. Those fired included Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s adviser Saud al-Qahtani and deputy intelligence chief Major General Ahmed Al-Assiri. Although the official story never specified such, on Sunday during an interview with Fox News officials, Saudi Arabian foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir, went further by describing Khashoggi’s death as a “murder” and a “tremendous mistake.” He also said they “don’t know where the body is.”

“The individuals who did this, did this outside the scope of their authority…There obviously was a tremendous mistake made, and what compounded the mistake was the attempt to try to cover up. That is unacceptable in any government,” Jubeir later said that Saudi Arabia was taking action to investigate how Khashoggi died and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

“We are determined to uncover every stone. We are determined to find out all the facts. And we are determined to punish those who are responsible for this murder,” he said.

On Monday, CNN published surveillance footage which, according to a Turkish investigator, showed a Saudi operative dressed up in Khashoggi’s clothes on the day the journalist was killed. The man, whom the Turkish official alleges is a body double, was seen at various locations around Istanbul that same day. Jubeir told Fox that Crown Prince Salman was not aware of the operation beforehand and the senior leadership over intelligence service was not aware of this.

The United States views on the case have been generally neutral, as the events and evidence regarding Khashoggi’s disappearance have been unsteady. When inquired on the case, President Trump has clearly stated that the Saudi government has not been truthful about everything.

When asked about Saudi Arabia’s account of the killing of Khashoggi Trump said, “Their stories are all over the place.” 

However, despite the questionable occurrences, Trump has continued to be supportive of the Crown Prince’s leadership and reiterated the importance of economic ties between the two countries.

“He’s seen as a person who can keep things under check…I mean that in a positive way…He truly loves his country,” said Trump.

 The international leaders have to come to question Saudi Arabia’s story. Saudi Arabia has gone from blanket denials of any involvement to an admission that the journalist was killed while visiting the consulate. Omer Celik, a senior official in Turkey’s ruling political party, has vocally questioned the credibility of Saudi Arabia’s explanation for Khashoggi’s death and the credibility of Saudi Arabia’s story.

“We are not preemptively blaming anyone but we will also not allow a coverup…It is a matter of honor for us that this is uncovered. We will shed light on this using all means we have. That is the will of our President,” Celik said on Saturday, in the first official Turkish reaction to Saudi Arabia’s midnight statement saying Khashoggi’s death was accidental.

President Trump, however, again indicated to journalists that he believed the Saudi account was credible, although he added that some questions remained, including the whereabouts of Khashoggi’s remains. It seems that the world will have to wait a little longer for investigations to turn up new evidence, until then it cannot be accurately concluded whether or not the official story by Saudi Arabia is regrettably true or  dreadfully false.

 

News: Honduras Citizens Lead The Biggest Migrant Caravan Ever Recorded Into The US

On October 12th, a massive caravan of migrants, mostly made up of Hondurans, started their journey to the United States. Migrant caravan have happened before, but this one is the biggest of them all.

Past migrant caravans were around a few hundred to a thousand, but the initial amount of migrants for this caravan were estimated at about five thousand. The numbers grew over the last couple weeks, reaching seven thousand, as the number is only expected to grow as the days go on and the caravan nears the U.S. southern border.

Reasoning behind the current migrant caravan is to escape from crime and poverty in the people’s home country of Honduras. There are over 9 million people that live in Honduras, but 5.5 million of them – around two thirds of the population – live in poverty, with most people’s average income ranging around $120 per month.

In recent years murders have gone up to 43 per 100,000 people according to Honduras’ National Autonomous University.  Gangs have a big contribution to the murders and problems that Honduras faces. They control large amounts of territory, and conduct drug trafficking through the country. Crime and corruption amongst government and police leave public support and opinions hopeless.

The migrants on this immigration hope are that they will be able to get a better life in the US and achieve the American Dream.

The caravans plan is to get to the US by traveling on foot or by vehicle through Mexico to the US-Mexico border. Recently, the caravan has already gone through Guatemala where police made an attempt to delay or stop the caravan, but still got through.

This goal and recent activity has a negative view from US president Donald Trump, who has made claims of it being a terrorist and cartel influenced problem, which is false due to no proof of his claims. Trump warns that if the caravan isn’t stopped, he will cut financial aid to certain South American countries and deploy military personnel to close the border between US and Mexico.

Immigrants are looking for a better life and will continue to make their journey from the poverty of Honduras to try and live out the American Dream.

 

Sports: “Just Do It” Campaign a Movement

Nike’s 30th anniversary of the ‘Just Do it’ campaign sparked a lot of controversy concerning their newest poster boy, Colin Kaepernick, who himself is a flashpoint of political division in an America more polarized than ever.

“Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything,”

This quote was used for their new advertisement with a picture of Colin Kaepernick’s face in the background. People are complaining that he has not sacrificed anything compared to other football players–players like Pat Tillman, who left the NFL to sacrifice his life in the U.S. armed forces.

On the other hand, others support Nike in their controversial campaign.

Nike, who has long been the subject of ethical criticism for their outsourcing strategy, is finally throwing their hat in the the ring of social justice, showing their point of view on the the racial injustices in the United States.

Where most companies would’ve tended to stay away from politics and race relations, Nike showed their firm stance on the subject. 

Kaepernick tweeted the full ad on wednesday. The video is a compilation of athletes who have to overcome obstacles to become the best in their sport. Towards the end of the video it shows Kaepernick in the middle of a city and he states, “Don’t ask if your dreams are crazy. Ask if they’re crazy enough.”

After the ad was released people immediately posted pictures and videos of Nike products being burned, Nike’s logo being cut out and people stating they will no longer be purchasing products from Nike and will take their commitment from Nike to other companies such as Adidas, Reebok, and Converse (even though Nike owns converse).

After these pictures and videos were released people started comparing Kaepernick to other athletes and posting memes about this ad, with many on social media saying, “Just Don’t” 

Kaepernick set in motion his controversial  political legacy with kneeling during the national anthem. People were outraged arguing that he is disrespecting our fallen soldiers. He compared his kneeling to those soldiers kneeling by graves of fallen comrades. Except, he’s kneeling for those victims of social injustice.

People argue that Colin is not fit to be the face of Nike, saying he did not do anything compared to the actions of someone like Pat Tillman, a former safety for the Arizona Cardinals who left the league to join the forces and lost his life in a friendly fire incident. People are saying all he did was protest police-brutality by kneeling.

On the other hand, there are those who are frustrated by all the publicity something like this is getting. Something that was a real eye opener was a tweet by an unknown account saying, “Imagine a country where a shoe ad is more controversial than a school shooting”

The American people care more about materialistic issues caused by an ad campaign by greedy shoe company than they do about the issues that corporation’s ad claims to reflect. This shows how distorted our societal views are these days. People give more time to something so minute compared to real world problems.

When the ad came out people expected the stock and the sales to plummet. But Nike surprised everyone when their sales increased by a whopping 31%. People all over social media recorded videos of Nike products burning, getting thrown away, and hashtagging #BoycottNike all over social media. All of the actions trying to protest Nikes new campaign were pointless, as they did not affect Nike’s income negatively whatsoever.

Nike has made a ton of social statements through their ‘Just Do It’ campaign, beginning  in 1988 when they addressed ageism featuring 80-year-old Walter Stack. Stack was a cross country runner who ran more than 62,000 miles over his life. Another a year later, the company advocated for people with disabilities starring Paralympian Craig Blanchette.

More famously, in 1993, an ad with Charles Barkley sparked a conversation about whether celebrities and professional athletes should be held to higher standards.

“I’m not paid to be a role model. I’m paid to wreak havoc on the basketball court,” stated Barkley.

In 1995 a “Just Do It” ad featured openly gay, HIV-positive runner Ric Munoz. AIDS activists applauded Nike for the campaign.

Nike tackled gender issues with its “If You Let Me Play” ad, which addressed the issue of organized sports for girls. The ad featured young girls quoting statistics about how sports can improve their lives.

In 2007, Nike featured Matt Scott of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association in a “Just Do It” ad.

Nike touched on gender issues again in 2012 with its “Voices” ad, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of Title IX.

Nike’s 2017 “Equality” campaign featured black athletes like LeBron James, Serena Williams, Gabby Douglas, and Kevin Durant, along with actor Michael B. Jordan talking of the parallels between equality in sports and equality in the broader world.

Nike also released the “What Will They Say About You?” ad in 2017, which featured five Middle Eastern women pushing social norms to succeed in sports like boxing and skateboarding.

In short, Nike has had a history of politically conscious ads, and the track record of these ads, regardless of Nike’s other business practices, proves they’ve come out on the right side of history time and time again. Will the same be true of Kaepernick?

People should worry less about answering that question and more about the pressing national issues at hand, which continue to breed deep-seated division.

Op-Ed: How Do We Stop School Shootings?

“School shootings are an unfortunate part of American culture and our American society.”

School shootings are an unnecessarily major part of American society in recent history. This year alone, 10 kids were killed at Santa Fe High School and 17 were killed in the infamous Parkland shooting, where adolescent lives were taken at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

These school shootings were tragic at the time they took place and are still tragic to this day. Families were torn apart because of what happened.

“We shouldn’t alienate students and bully anyone, because that could negatively trigger their mental stability,” said school head of attendance Ms. Margie Woods.

Preventing these school shootings isn’t easy, because there is heavy disagreement on whether or not the Second Amendment should be upheld because of how guns are abused in society.

“If we have safety in and around the school and enough education for our students and our faculty, these [shootings] can be prevented. Teachers shouldn’t carry guns because it would cause mass panic,” said Ms. Woods.

Teachers having guns and being able to obtain them and use them for self-defense when school shooters do intrude is a hot topic, but Woods thinks teachers shouldn’t be able to use them.

“As an American society we must do background checks and especially check for mental health issues with our students and teachers regularly. As a teacher, I don’t feel comfortable with me having a weapon or another teacher having a weapon,” said director of student activities and history teacher Mr. Fernando Avila.

Mr. Avila backs up Ms. Woods in her belief on teachers and firearms and even admits that he himself wouldn’t feel comfortable carrying one.

Students also fear the idea of teachers having and carrying weapons around, such as Bosco junior Nate Quigg.

“Teachers shouldn’t have a weapon in class because an “at-risk” child could pull a gun out and the teacher would have to fire upon that child in self-defense,” said Quigg.

That’s something no teacher would have to ever want to do and creates unnecessary conflicts and potential for disaster.

“If teachers had weapons, there would have to be mental health checks and administration would need to double-check their backgrounds,” said Mr. Avila.

It’s a controversial topic, and definitely a desperate move in hope for preventing school shootings and keeping schools safe in America. Action needs to be taken sometime in the near future.

 

 

Sports: Serena Williams Draws Controversy Yet Again At U.S. Open

The 2018 Women’s US Open Final ended in a controversial loss for superstar Serena Williams, another situation amplified by gender equality that took the sports world by storm.

We live in a world where in recent history, humans have been oppressed and discriminated against because of the color of their skin or their gender. It was difficult for people who were treated poorly and discriminated against to be successful in society, not to mention the harsh backlash they received for trying to break racial barriers in sports.

Athletes such as Jackie Robinson and Althea Gibson paved the way for athletes in African-American history, and sports leagues like the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) and WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) made a statement for women trying to make a name for themselves.

The 21st century really broke ground in sports for the new age of athletes. Athletes of any color and both genders have no problem getting into sports, as all that is required is skill nowadays. Coaches and management don’t care if you’re white, black, man or woman, the only thing they care about is if you can make things happen and win games.

In her most recent loss in the 2018 US Open, tennis icon Serena Williams was frustrated with how the game was being called and how she got her first two penalties.

The match was very much anticipated, as it showcased the best female tennis player of our generation in Serena Williams going up against one of the best young and upcoming players in the game; Naomi Osaka from Japan. Also, with the game being a national event and many people in attendance, there was no shortage of eyes peeled to this game.

In the beginning of the game, Serena got straight-up outplayed and was overpowered by the 20-year-old Osaka. Osaka caught the attention of the viewers, letting them know that she is the real deal and winning the first set with a commanding score of 6-2.

Early on in the second set, the game’s chair umpire, Carlos Ramos, caught Serena’s coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, sending hand signals to her from the stands, which is a code violation. Williams was consistent with claiming she did not want to be coached nor did she need it and has maintained that claim throughout. Her coach did admit to sending signals afterward. However, many coaches do end up still doing the same thing and ignoring the violation rule. Unfortunately for Williams, Mouratoglou was caught and a penalty was given to her.

Following Ramos’ call, Williams was disappointed and frankly livid at the chair umpire for thinking that she would cheat. However, the referee can only go based on what he sees, as he saw a violation and he called it right by the rule book. Now, if Serena Williams doesn’t like that rule, she can talk to the people upstairs but being frustrated at the referee for doing his job is unfair and unprofessional on her part.

Soon after, Williams received a second violation for racquet abuse which cost her a point. At this point, the fire was lit within her and she started going off on the referee on national television. Williams called Ramos a “thief” and claimed he “stole points” from her. She kept rambling on and continued to complain to the referee, and ultimately he got tired of it and issued Williams another code violation, resulting in a game penalty.

Williams wasn’t done. She continued complaining even after the game was declared over and called out the tournament supervisor and tournament referee. She even went on to tell the media that she believes that the ref was completely sexist towards her and she deals with this all the time.

There is something wrong with her statement, however. Carlos Ramos is known to be a stickler in the tennis community, and not just to women.

In August of 2016, Ramos called a code violation on Andy Murray for saying “stupid umpiring.” Another 2016 incident, Ramos called a code violation on Nick Kyrgios for yelling at the towel boy. In July of 2017, Ramos called a time violation on Andy Murray for playing too slowly. In 2018 during Wimbledon, Ramos gave Novak Djokovic a code violation for slamming his racquet on the ground.

There are many more incidents that show how strict Ramos is as a ump. Ramos isn’t to be called and declared sexist based on his actions in the US Open Final. It is very improper for Serena to pull the gender card and accuse Ramos of such an ignorant thing to say.

Williams was getting outworked, she got mad and went against the rules. The ump realized this and called it how he saw it, and Serena then got mad and acted like everybody was against her. She went straight to sexism as fast as this story got out. End of story.

Sure, Ramos was a little over the top. He could have handled the situation a little bit better but he is known to be a hardcore, by-the-book ump. Pulling the gender card was an easy way out of the situation for Williams, a way of not facing her problems.

The real problem in this whole situation is that everyone was so focused on Williams and Ramos’ disagreement that Naomi’s great outing and accomplishment was overlooked. The young talent faced her idol and beat the greatest player in our generation, not to mention dominating the game. Osaka was looking like she was going to win the game regardless of what happened through Ramos forfeiting Williams.

first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam is not even being mentioned. It is a shame, what should have been one of the great moments in tennis history for Osaka became an embarrassing day for the sport of tennis. Naomi didn’t deserve it, as she should’ve been celebrating instead of sobbing in disgust and in fear that no one liked her because the entire crowd was booing.

Ultimately, it was a bad look for the sport of tennis on the biggest stage of the sport annually. Whether you blame Ramos or Williams, the situation was unfortunate for all parties involved and could have been avoided.           

 

Mama Shields: Surviving Hurricane Katrina

“It changed my whole life, I became homeless and jobless. I had possessions in my home that could never be replaced.”

With Hurricane Florence affecting residents of North and South Carolina, Bosco religion teacher Ms. Valerie “Mama” Shields reflected on her own story of being a victim of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Going through a hurricane is extremely tragic, and many people living in California are fortunate enough to have avoided the experience. Residents must leave their belongings, their money and most importantly their homes while evacuating. For some people, it’s the home they grew up in.

The main tragedy of the hurricane is the destruction it leaves in its wake. Imagine coming back to your home and seeing nothing but destruction, filth, and sadness. As for Ms. Shields, she explained that she was one of the lucky ones, as she evacuated her home early and had insurance to rebuild her home.

Other people who were less fortunate had no insurance, decided to stay and take on the storm, or even ended up losing their lives.

Not only is the destruction devastating, but it also takes a long time to rebuild the community fully.

“People in New Orleans expected the town to be completely rebuilt in five years, and now 13 years later it’s still suffering from Katrina,” said Ms. Shields.

Although this situation is a tragic one, many people such as the citizens who suffered, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the United States Coast Guard still contribute to New Orleans to have it rebuilt and return to its amazing and vibrant culture.

Although Ms. Shields lost lots of her possessions and her home, she explained that she experienced a sense of “humbleness” when she was being taken care of by the Red Cross Organization and while she witnessed many people of different ethnicities and ages in the same situation she was in.

“Seeing all those people giving us a helping hand to those who needed it really brought me to a sense of humbleness,” said Ms. Shields.

Sadly, another hurricane has recently arrived and began hitting the east coast of the United States last Friday: Hurricane Florence. Mandatory evacuations began early last week and lives have already been taken in the aftermath.

“I sometimes experience anxiety and PTSD because I worry for those who are going to suffer and I know what people are going to be going through,” said Ms. Shields.

“I share my story every year to give my students an idea that they are truly blessed everyday they are safe and to make sure that they help whomever needs it. Make sure that if you see a brother down, give them a hand.”

During this time, we can always look to give a helping hand and try to support those in a fight with Hurricane Florence.

 

News: Hurricane Florence Update

Hurricane Florence wreaked havoc in both North and South Carolina this past weekend, causing mass amounts of rainfall and flash flooding with some places receiving over 20 inches of rain.

According to CNN, more than 1 million people were under a mandatory evacuation as the hurricane approached the shore, and every county in North Carolina experienced some sort of National Weather Service alert. South Carolina has its own problems as their death toll rises and the rainfall continues.

Hurricane Florence has so far caused the death of 32 people, and about 740,000 homes and businesses are still without power, according to CBS News. Although there has been success restoring some of the power in the recover effort, this hurricane caused significant damage to North and South Carolina in only a couple of days.

Hurricane Florence certainly remains a problem this week for both civilians and rescue workers in the Carolinas. Many incidents of flash floods have put a lot of people in danger of drowning. These flash floods resulted from the constant rainfall Florence produced, causing rivers to overflow and mass amounts of damage due to the sheer force of the water being able to move cars and topple houses. The constant threat of flash flooding puts the rescue workers on alert at all times waiting for the next call for help.

“[Hurricane Florence has] never been more dangerous than right now,” Gov. Roy Cooper said at a news conference.

The storm continues to rage on destroying everything in its path. In places like Wilmington, NC rescuers have spent the past two days plucking more than 450 people from floodwaters, according to the New York Times. The heavy rain and flooding is not predicted to slow down until late this week.
