Bosco: The Emergence of Artificial Energy In Teens

by Sele Pemasa

Creatine is a substance mostly found in muscle cells and is constantly taken as a supplement. Its primary role is to store phosphocreatine which is stored in the muscles and is used for heavy lifting and intense exercise.

Creatine also helps gain muscles by improving cell signaling which aids muscle repair cp-creatine_br50_image_largeand new muscle growth, lower myostatin levels, and increase cell hydration. The substance gains muscle growth and can apply to untrained individuals and elite athletes.

Before a workout, many athletes love to drink Bang as a pre-workout because it gives you that extra burst of energy when you’re feeling tired and need something to wake you up. It gives you that push when you’re about to give out on that last rep.

bang-energy-europe-1.jpg

However, there are some extreme downsides to using and taking creatine and drinking bang’s, especially for high school athletes.

“Most of the time, the things it says on it aren’t exactly true. Most of the supplements have steroids in it which weakens the ligaments,” said head athletic trainer Ms. Melody Mohebbi.

The use of Creatine has recently become more popular than ever before. With the high school sports scene at an extremely competitive state, athletes continue to try and get a leg up on one another.

“A lot more people are using Creatine now compared to back in the day,” said Ms. Mohebbi.

Ms. Mohebbi made it clear to me that she was against the use of Creatine.

“I prefer that athletes stick to the natural way of gaining muscle rather than taking Creatine supplements,” said assistant trainer Ms. Alexis.

Creatine is popular nowadays, but isn’t the safest supplement to use and treat our bodies with.

Bang is an energy drink that is labeled on the market as a fat loss aid and energy stimulator for users who want to get a bit of energy to increase their workout intensity and to also lower their body fat percentage.

Bang also contains caffeine, it originally had 357 mg of caffeine per can but then later on was reduced to 300 mg.

Athletes from many different sports including football, baseball, and basketball love to drink a bang – even before a game.

“I drink it before every game I pitch, it keeps me awake and helps keep high intensity,” said varsity baseball player David Hays.

Hays also mentioned that it works very well and has great taste as well.

“When I workout I just never get tired, it pumps me up,” said Hays.

The use of Creatine supplements and the emergence of the Bang are dangerous yet effective for athletes trying to improve their craft.

News: The El Chapo Conviction Trial

by Matthew Ruiz

El Chapo – otherwise known as “Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera” – is a Mexican drug lord who is the world’s most notorious drug lord since Pablo Escobar’s empire was run down.

la-1550872523-9ejx4sw84q-snap-image

El Chapo was born on April 4th, 1957 and is currently 61 years of age. He has thirteen children and has been married to Emma Coronel Aispuro since 2007.

Chapo – as of right now – “has been captured three times.” His second escape from federal watch was back on January 19th, 2001.

“With help from bribed guards – one identified as Francisco Cambrios Riviera – they opened El Chapo’s door,” according to The New York Times.

His last escape, which went viral on social media – as even rap artist 2 Chainz made a song titled “El Chapo Jr” about it – is easily his most famous.

“On July 11th, 2015, Chapo escaped through tunnels under Mexico’s top security prison with help from his wife –  Emma Coronel Aispuro,” stated Mexico News Daily.

Chapo went into trial for transporting drugs to the US. He has been in trial for the past three months in New York, being exposed for his inner sprawl cartel. This trial has ended the rain of the kingpin known as El Chapo.

“As Judge Brian M. Cogan read the jury’s charge sheet in open court, ten straight guilty verdicts on all ten counts of the indictment. Mr. Guzmán sat listening to a translator, looking stunned,” reported The NY Times.

The jury’s decision took a week to come up with the official verdict. Chapo is now facing life in prison at his sentence hearing scheduled for June 25th, were he will be sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole.

Authorities are now getting El Chapo’s sons involved as well.

“A week after the conclusion of the three-month trial of ‘El Chapo,’ two of his sons were indicted yesterday on drug conspiracy charges by the United States Justice Department,” stated CNN.

Joaquín Guzmán López, 34, and Ovidio Guzmán López, 28, are being accused for importing cocaine, methamphetamine, and weed to the United States. Chapo’s sons have been found guilty and are said to have been importing these drugs since 2008.

El Chapo’s lawyers are now fighting for a retrial, stating that there was alleged jury misconduct.

“Attorney Eduardo Balarezo, in a letter Friday, informed US District Judge Brian Cogan of the defense team’s intention to file a motion for a new trial. He cited a Vice News report this week that quoted an unnamed juror who said several panel members followed media accounts despite the judge’s instructions to ‘stay away’ from media coverage,” stated CNN.

Ultimately, the evidence is against Chapo and is clear, so it is extremely unlikely he will be freed of his rich and alarming past actions.

News: Teenagers At Party In Newport Make Anti-Semitic Gesture

by Nikolas Molina

Social media images surfaced last week of teenagers performing the Nazi salute at a party in Newport Beach, California while gathering around red plastic cups arranged in the shape of a swastika.

Picture from Newport party (cups arranged to form swastika)

The party this Nazi salute took place was at a Newport District High School party.

According to The Los Angeles Times, the Newport School District will cooperate with law enforcement to identify each of the students in the images. The pictures first surfaced on Saturday night all over social media. People reposted it and attempted to make it go viral so that the students could be punished.

“We were recently made aware of social media postings involving some students who created inappropriate Anti-Semitic symbols, and possible underage drinking,” the schools’ spokeswoman stated.

“While these actions did not occur on any school campus or school function, we condemn all acts of Anti-Semitism and hate in all their forms,” she continued.

Other pictures surfaced from that night of students toasting over the swastika made from red solo cups that had a caption on the picture that stated “ultimate rage.” Another picture that surfaced was a picture of the swastika and the caption read “German rage cage.”

According to The Washington Post, a report from the ADL (Anti-Defamation League), incidents of Anti-Semitism in the United States went up 57 percent between 2016 and 2017 and the dramatic rise is largely attributed to a “significant increase” in cases in schools or on college campuses.

“I am appalled that Nazism is still present in today’s society,” said Nicholas Guggiana, a senior at St. John Bosco High School.

Personally, I do not think that any form of hate should still be prevalent in today’s society. Generations in the past have fought way too hard for equality, have had too many wars, and have been discriminated more than enough times to have acts of hate still existing.

“I think that it is immaturity at its finest, and that the youth of society does not respect the 6 million plus Jewish lives that were lost during the Holocaust,” said Derek Delgado, also a senior at Bosco.

These students were fully aware of what they were doing. Some may say it was a joke, but when 6 million lives are being mocked, there is nothing to joke about.

News: Deepfake Taking Over The World?

by Joshua Adoh

The Deepfake phenomenon is a great technological advancement and can even be seen as an evolution in cintimatic effects, however the application of this technological advancement can be quite alarming, being named the internet’s most latest moral crisis.

hqdefault

For those of you who do not understand the concept of the “Deepfake,” they are videos manufactured by artificial intelligence in order to make people appear to say or do things they did not do in the original video.

Deepfake has been around for sometime now. The artificial intelligence of this software has the capabilities to affect our society negatively as well as foreign affairs. This high-tech deception technology was first spotted and reported in December 2017 in the technical and scientific section of the magazine Vice. Following this incident, a widespread bunch of fabricated videos were created of celebrities from websites to magazines.

According to AINews (Artificial Intelligence News), one of President Trump’s speeches was the first Deepfake video to be televised and it can be understood that it will not be the last.

“The station, Q13, broadcasted a doctored Trump speech in which he somehow appeared even more orange and pulled amusing faces. You can see a side-by-side comparison to the original video,” stated AINews.

The employee stationed at Q13 was found and apprehended, yet it is still unclear who created the clip and how it was allowed to air. There is a questions regarding this phenomenon: How will this technology influence our society as well as foreign decisions?

“Just five percent of Americans have ‘a lot of trust’ in the information they get from social media. This is much lower than in national and local news organizations,” according to Pew Research.

This is not the first time and will not be the last we have hear of these ‘sophisticated disinformation campaigns,’ which at one point in time the US was the main creator and influencer of these campaigns. Russia has been linked to these campaigns as well with their infamous Twitter Bots.

With this new ‘copy and paste’ video technology, it is not far-fetched to see an increased number of fabricated videos that seem like they are from reliable sources. These ‘trusted’ outlets of information together with the combined help of the subtle yet powerful influence of social media can cause an uproar of epic proportions.

Deepfake is also affecting celebrities’ reputation. As you can imagine, this kind of publicity can be rather unflattering and offensive to rising and or plateaued celebrities. These realistic face-swaps are relatively easy to use and has created a community on Reddit, where creators can compare and swap notes of their latest projects.

Although these Deepfake videos are seen as funny and amusing now, if they begin to harm and artificially corrupt Trump and other major figures, these videos may not be so harmless.

Sports: Bryce Harper Sets Record Contract

by Nikolas Molina

Three weeks into spring training, Bryce Harper has reportedly agreed to a 13 year, $330 million contact with the Philadelphia Phillies.

harper_phillies_16x9

According to The New York Times, the deal was confirmed by a person with direct knowledge of it, who was granted anonymity because the Phillies had not yet announced it.

The length of this contract and Harper’s age (26) ultimately leaves him to spend the rest of his career with the Phillies.

This is the largest contract to ever be signed in the MLB and in North American sports, beating Manny Machado’s recent 10-year, $300 million and Giancarlo Stanton’s 13-year, $325 million extension.

Harper officially went through a successful physical this past Saturday and is officially a Philadelphia Phillie.

The 26-year old will receive a $10 million salary for this season, $26 million for 9 seasons after that, and the last three he will receive $22 million. Also, Harper will receive $20 million in bonuses.

He denied a 10 year, $300 million dollar contract from the Washington Nationals, denying this offer gave us insight on the riches he would actually receive from another organization. Leading up to this agreement with Philadelphia, the Dodgers showed a huge amount of interest in Harper. According to CBS Sports, the Dodgers were reportedly willing to offer Harper $45 million per year for 4 years.

Harper spent his first seven years in the league with the Washington Nationals. Harper was drafted first overall by the Nationals in 2010. He made his debut in 2012, reeling in 59 RBI’s and 22 home runs en route to winning the Rookie of the Year. In 2015, he won the Most Valuable Player award having ultimately his best season batting .330 with a .460 on-base percentage, 42 home runs, and 99 RBIs.

With the Nationals holding the 2018 All-Star Game and the Home Run Derby, Bryce Harper decided to take part in the Home Run Derby. The crowd was ecstatic filled with Harper’s jersey giving him a big home field advantage ultimately leading him to his victory.

Phillies acquiring Bryce Harper ends their very active offseason with their fifth all-star caliber free agent. Adding catcher J.T. Realmuto, shortstop Jean Segura, left fielder Andrew McCutchen and relief pitcher David Robertson.

The lineup for this season will look like this,

  • Cesar Hernandez (2B)
  • Bryce Harper (RF)
  • Jean Segura (SS)
  • Rhys Hoskins (1B)
  • J.T. Realmuto (C)
  • Andrew McCutchen (LF)
  • Odubel Herrera (CF)
  • Maikel Franco (3B)
  • Aaron Nola (SP)

The Phillies went 16-33 in their last 49 games of last season and finished with a 80-82 record, the sixth straight year of a losing record. They have not made the playoffs since 2011.

With all the additions to the Phillies roster some may argue that they will be playoff contenders. Having a lot of star power added to their team and having well rounded players will allow for a solid defense and offense.

Album Review: Drip Or Drown 2

by Nnamdi Chugbo

On February 22nd, 2019, Atlanta-based rapper Gunna released his debut album and first project of 2019, “Drip or Drown 2.”

img_9376-1-.jpg

Gunna had a very strong 2018, to say the least. In February of 2018, Gunna gave fans arguably his best piece of work of all time in “Drip Season 3.” He then continued to collaborate with big-time artists such as Lil Baby, Travis Scott, Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, Tory Lanez, and even with Mariah Carey. His collaborative mixtape “Drip Harder” with Lil Baby was certified as RIAA gold (500,000 units sold), and it featured the 2018 hit single “Drip Too Hard, which was certified RIAA platinum (1,000,000 units sold).

Looking to further his success in the past year, Gunna delivered a 16-track album to his fans with the two lead singles “One Call” and “Speed It Up.” The album is executively produced by Wheezy and Turbo the Great, and brings in the likes of Playboi Carti, Young Thug, and Lil Baby for featuring verses on “Same Yung N*gga,” “3 Headed Snake,” and “Derrick Fisher.”

Throughout the album, Gunna smoothly sails over calming, melodic beats while rapping about expensive clothing, new cars, and the high life. Gunna holds a high reputation for consistently bringing out the best of soothing acoustic guitar beats, and he truly delivered once again on songs such as “Richie Millie Plan” and “Out The Hood.” Gunna even floats on a beat with a Chinese sample from Tong-Li on “Who You Foolin,” where he speaks about keeping his faith in God and staying focused on his work to avoid all the fake people and evil facades in his life.

While it boasts some impressive qualities, “Drip or Drown 2″ is not a perfect project, however. The album is consumed by slow paced songs, which Gunna excels in. The album completely dismisses the amazing melodic value that Gunna can bring to fast paced beats.

Overall, the album delivers a solid 16-track soundtrack of relaxed beats that Gunna complements well with his unique style of sing-rapping. “Drip or Drown 2″ brings in the firepower of some solid features while not over-saturating it with too many. As always, Gunna’s production from Wheezy and Turbo the Great is top tier, arguably the best in the game right now.

The album lacks the powerful fast paced charm of his 2018 project “Drip Season 3,” but still puts his incomparable melodic talents to display. Listeners should definitely be excited for the rest of Gunna’s work in 2019, as the young artist has much space for improvement and experimenting.

Album Review: Father Of 4

by Christian James

We see another side to Migos member Offset with his newly released album, Father Of 4.”

offset-father-of-4-jpg.jpeg

Offset is a memeber of the famous rap group “Migos,” which includes fellow superstars Quavo and Takeoff. The trio mostly raps together, but in the past year all three have dropped their own solo album. With recently new solo albums “Quavo Huncho” by Quavo and “The Last Rocket” by Takeoff, Offset was up to the plate. Both of these albums had great reviews, but Offset’s new album “Father of 4” blows them out in comparison.

Offset usually raps about money, women, and his hometown of Atlanta, but in this album he does more then that. This project is a lot more personal, which makes it more meaningful for his listeners. There has been a whole lot of news – good and bad – regarding his personal life with his wife, Cardi B, and his four children. Offset reflects all of this into this album for all of his listeners to hear. Seeing this side of him, many listeners – fan or not – have been drawn to his album.

His first song on this project is “Father of 4” where he mainly addresses his struggles raising his children and his gratitude towards them individually. Offset describes the hard life he went through when he was poor and didn’t have a stable job when his daughters were initially born. He was trying anything to provide for his family, whether that meant breaking the law or not.

Being consumed by all this worry, Offset was not always there for his daughter at special times like her birthday, and he apologized for that in this song. He wanted to tell his daughters his story to show them that he really cared for them. In this song he also shows his love for his son and recently newborn daughter, Kulture. He raps about how much his son acts similar towards him and how he promises to protect Kulture from the world. He wants to redeem himself for everything he couldn’t do when he was poor.

In “Don’t Lose Me” – another track on the album – Offset explains his downfall with Cardi B and how he is truly sorry for allegedly cheating on her. He calls himself selfish for breaking their promise and that he is trying his best to be a better person. He wants another chance to treat her like a queen and shower her with diamonds like she deserves. Looking at the song “Clout” featuring no other than Cardi B herself, it seems as if she forgives him. Cardi – in this song – tells all her adversaries to stop using her and Offset’s name for fame and to back off.

The album contains many popular features such as J.Cole, Gunna, CeeLo Green, Travis Scott, 21 Savage, Gucci Mane, and Quavo. With this album selling 77k-82k copies in the first week, Offset is gaining a reputation from his audience that his talent level has now made him the best rapper out of the “Migos.”

Album Review: Harverd Dropout

by Nick Hernandez

On February 22nd at 12:00 AM, Miami rapper Lil Pump finally released his long awaited Harverd Dropout.

https---hypebeast.com-image-2019-01-lil-pump-harverd-dropout-cover-release-date-announcement-1.jpg

Harverd Dropout is the second album Lil Pump has dropped in his 3 years of being in the rap game. His debut album Lil Pump was released in October of 2017, eventually being certified Gold, having sold 500,000 copies. His newest project, Harverd Dropout, much like his first has an assortment of features from highly acclaimed rappers – including Kanye West, Smokepurpp, Offset, Quavo, Lil Uzi Vert, YG and 2 Chainz – and his tracks sponsor the boastful lifestyle of the 18-year old rapper.

The album’s titled Harverd Dropout intentionally spelled incorrectly, paying homage to the time Pump incorrectly spelled Harvard University. Even more so, it is derived from the rapper’s fanbase and the ongoing joke that Pump attended Harvard University only to drop out of school to pursue his rap career. He has addressed this multiple times in tracks outside of this album, but the song on this project that offers a glimpse into how Pump views it is “Drop Out.”

As Lil Pump puts it, “[I] dropped out, then I got rich … [I] dropped out, knowing I was going be a star.” He says this in a nonchalant manner, implying that his rise to fame was fairly simple and his career so far has been very successful.

Throughout the album, each track follows Lil Pump’s generic style involving sex, money and drugs; in his circumstance this seems to be a subject which he will not break from any time soon as – in a sense – it is what sells his music.

In addition to him continuing to talk about these profanities, it should be taken into account that Pump can still be defined by the stereotype of being very repetitive. The most popular culprit in this case is Lil Pump’s 2017 platinum record, “Gucci Gang” and in Harverd Dropout, his repetitive nature seems to be nowhere near ending. In total, of the 16 songs on Harverd Dropout, 11 feature an absurdly monotonous chorus.

The 11 songs which contain a repeating chorus are “Drop Out”, “Nu Uh”, “I Love It”, “Racks on Racks”, “Off White”, “Too Much Ice”, “Multi Millionaire”, “Vroom Vroom Vroom”, “Be Like Me”, “Stripper Name” and “Drug Addicts”, wherein the tracks replay the chorus at maximum, three times. Another detail to take note of is that from his 16 track album, seven of the songs were singles – that is – they were released prior to Harverd Dropout yet Pump still included them in the project.

One of the singles that was included in Harverd Dropout received a lot of controversy over a racial slur that Pump wrote into the song. The offender, “Butterfly Doors” released on January 4th of this year, and many of his fans noticed the blatant racial connotation when Pump in the song was quoted as saying the following, “Smoking on dope, they call me Yao Ming cause my eyes real low (Ching Chong).”

Pump is notorious for his drug-related lyrics and way of life; this verse is a nod to Pump’s love for marijuana but he didn’t consider the negative repercussions that would follow the song’s release. “Butterfly Doors” received a lot of backlash from multiple racial and ethnic communities and their reception to the song forced him to censor the line that contained the offense. Pump made a public statement through an Instagram post where he apologized for what was said and everything seemed to settle down for the rapper.

Reception of the album was particularly mixed, in that most reviews came to the consensus that although the album was not particularly good substance-wise, it is a successful “crowd pleaser.” Despite Lil Pump’s efforts to produce content with high grade lyrical quality, the album does serve its purpose with respect to who the composer is and his fanbase. Pump often creates music that entertains the younger generation’s partying lifestyle and the album he constructed fits perfectly into this class.

News: Stars Are Born At The 91st Academy Awards

by Gabriel Botello

The 91st Academy Awards proved to be astonishing without a host but with many amazing nominations, performances, and presenters.

oscars-2019-lady-gaga-bradley-cooper.jpg

2018 was definitely the year where diversity between race and gender flourished within the films and the production of these films. This showed as many different actresses, actors, producers, directors, and designers received awards for their excellence.

Rami Malek won the award for best actor due to his role in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” This was a big win for him and his family as he dedicated his award to his parents and his cast for helping him through the difficult journey.

“I am the son of immigrants from Egypt, I’m a first generation American, and part of my story is being written right now and I could not be more grateful to each and everyone of you and everyone who believed in me,” Malek mentioned in his speech.

Olivia Colman later won the award for “best actress” for her role in the film “The Favourite.” This was an emotional win for Coleman, as she expressed her emotions of joy and gratitude in her speech for her supporters and family in England.

Mahershala Ali won “Best Supporting Actor” because of his role in “Green Book” and Regina King won “Best Supporting Actress” for her role in “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

One topic that seemed to receive a lot of backlash was the movie “Green Book” for winning the award for “Best Picture.” Many people disagreed how the director, Peter Farrelly – also the director of Dumb and Dumber and Dumb and Dumber 2 – was even qualified to receive such an award.

There was also more backlash because most people thought that other nominations were more qualified for the award for Best Picture. Celebrities such as Spike Lee and Chadwick Boseman expressed their emotions during the ceremony as Lee tried to leave and Boseman made a disappointed and displeased look.

As for what most expected, the song “Shallow” won “Best Original Song,” as it touched many people’s hearts in the movie “A Star is Born.” During the ceremony, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper performed their song, touching the hearts of everyone in the room.

Of course, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” won “Best Animated Feature” because of its vibrant picture, diversity, and soundtrack. This movie appealed to many kids of different race because of its main message that “anyone can wear the mask.”

Although the 91st Academy Awards didn’t have a host, special guest presenters that brought elegance, fame, and comedy to the ceremony made up for it.

Special guests like Trevor Noah and Serena Williams and comedians Melissa McCarthy and Mike Myers truly brought the ceremony to life.
